The Collings CJ, or “Collings Jumbo,” is a power house for the folk guitarist who wants volume and balance in each strum. In addition to classic Collings characteristics such as the sunburst Sitka top, this acoustic guitar borrows features from some of the most renowned guitar craftsmen in the business, including:

  • A large guitar body whose slope shoulder is inspired by dreadnought Gibson guitars
  • An abundance of rosewood inspired by Gibson’s Advanced Jumbo guitar

Classic Collings Look with Luxury Features

The Collings CJ covers many of the classic Collings features that makes the company’s guitars so desirable. The Sitka spruce top with a sunburst finish is standard, but we requested a few special characteristics to spice up this model’s look, including its:

  • Back strip
  • Braces
  • Pick guard
  • Binding

This Collings CJ has a #3 back strip that is fancier and more colorful than other versions. In addition, the back strip is all wood as opposed to pearl or other materials. Also, this Collings acoustic guitar is tricked out with Adirondack braces, a tiger stripe pick guard, and ivoroid binding around the entire headstock, neck, and body. Lastly, the ebony fingerboard and bridge gives a more refined, denser, and louder tone.

Bigger Frame For Better Sound

Unlike many of the Collings acoustic guitars we’ve recently reviewed, the Collings CJ has a much bigger frame. While this adds to the model’s volume and projection, you don’t have to worry about your sound getting out-of-control. The Collings CJ also has a sloped shoulder that balances the tone and provides natural compression.

An Abundance of Rosewood

The Collings CJ’s scale and tone woods were inspired by Gibson’s Advanced Jumbo. Even more than the Collings CJ’ssize, this acoustic’s rosewood back and sides give it a round bottom end not commonly found in other guitars’ mid-rangy mahogany bodies.

My Verdict

If you’re searching for a quality instrument at a reasonable price, the Collings CJ is a fairly standard Collings guitar whose price hits the middle of the road for this brand. While finger stylists may be better off with a smaller guitar with more pronounced tones, folk or country musicians can get great strumming rhythm with the Collings CJ.
