Shop Marc Maingard Acoustic Guitars — Old World Craftsmanship from the Tip of Africa

Few luthiers bring as rich a backstory to their work as Marc Maingard. Born in Durban, South Africa, to French immigrant parents with a family lineage tracing back to court lute and viol makers, Maingard came to guitar building almost by accident when he couldn't find anyone to repair his own instrument in the early 1970s. That spark of necessity ignited a career spanning nearly five decades. He went on to sharpen his skills working alongside legends, spending time with the Santa Cruz Guitar Company, Jimmy D'Aquisto, Martin, and Gibson before returning to South Africa to build some of the most celebrated handcrafted acoustics in the world.

Working from his home in Scarborough, South Africa, Maingard graduates and tunes each top entirely by hand, coaxing maximum resonance from premium tonewoods like Brazilian rosewood, European spruce, and figured maple. His builds are deeply personal, each one shaped around the wishes of the player who commissioned it. Models range from fingerstyle-focused 000 and GC configurations to classical and concert guitars, all featuring his signature attention to detail in bindings, purfling, and voicing.

With Maingard now approaching retirement after nearly 50 years, his remaining instruments represent a genuinely rare opportunity to own a piece of guitar making history.
