Taylor Guitars has been building instruments in El Cajon, California since 1974, when Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug turned a small shop into one of the most influential acoustic guitar makers in the world. The company built its name on playability, consistency, and innovative design, and those priorities carry through everything it makes. The GS Mini Bass is a good example of that thinking applied to a corner of the market that does not get much attention: a compact, approachable acoustic bass designed to be easy to pick up and hard to put down.
The GS Mini-e Bass uses a 23-1/2 inch scale length, roughly ten inches shorter than a standard bass guitar, which makes the frets easier to reach and the whole instrument friendlier for kids, newer players, and guitarists doubling on bass. Taylor worked with D’Addario to develop custom nylon-core strings for the bass, giving it a slinky feel and warm, clear low notes with a nod to the sound of an upright. The onboard ES-B pickup and preamp includes tone and volume controls and a built-in tuner, so it is ready to plug in for a gig, a session, or a quiet home recording. The standard model pairs a solid spruce top with sapele back and sides, while the Koa Bass edition adds a Hawaiian koa top and visual flair, and a maple version has also joined the family. Each one ships with a gig bag, which makes it an easy instrument to throw over a shoulder and take anywhere.
