Shop J. Rieck Acoustic Guitars

Josh Rieck came to lutherie in 2002, drawn by what he describes as the beautiful crossroads of music and visual art. He trained formally at Minnesota State College in Red Wing, Minnesota, graduated with honors from the Guitar Repair and Construction program, and went on to earn a master's degree in double bass performance before committing to instrument building full time. That background across multiple instrument families is not incidental. It shapes the way Rieck thinks about tone, structure, and playability, and it shows up in every guitar that leaves his Sioux Falls workshop. Along the way he spent time behind the scenes at the National Music Museum, working with instruments that span centuries of lutherie history, an experience that gave him a reference point most builders simply never have access to.

Rieck builds acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and ukuleles on commission, with each instrument taking shape around the player who will ultimately play it. His acoustics are known for precise intonation up and down the neck, well-balanced tone, and thoughtful features like soundports that open up the instrument's voice for the player. Tonewoods vary by build and include selections like koa and Carpathian spruce alongside more traditional pairings. He has shown his work at festivals and shows across the country including the Fretboard Summit, the Artisan Guitar Show, and the Ukulele Guild of Hawaii Show, placing his instruments alongside some of the most respected boutique builders in the country.
