Shop Klein & Kauffman Acoustic Guitars
Klein & Kauffman represents one of the most enduring collaborations in American lutherie. Designer Steve Klein and master builder Steven Kauffman first crossed paths in 1979 and have worked together for over four decades, producing instruments that occupy a rare space between sculptural artistry and serious playability. Kauffman builds each guitar one at a time by hand out of his shop in Cottage Grove, Oregon, making every instrument a genuinely singular object. Their client list over the years has included Joni Mitchell, Andy Summers, Joe Walsh, and Michael Hedges, among others, which speaks to the caliber of player these instruments attract.
The guitars are best known for their unconventional ergonomic body design and the Kasha-inspired bridge system, which uses individual saddles and string posts to optimize intonation and sustain across the entire fretboard. Models like the 426 are particularly sought after, offering a refined acoustic voice with exceptional note separation and sustain. Tonewoods vary by build and commission, with Brazilian rosewood, Sitka spruce, and ebony appointments appearing regularly on higher-specification instruments.
If you are interested in acquiring or commissioning a Klein & Kauffman guitar, we encourage you to get in touch with us at Eddie's Guitars. Our staff can walk you through current availability and help you explore custom order options.
