A honey colored cedar soundboard, dark ribbons of Madagascar Rosewood, and luminous accents of golden koa give this J. Rieck 00 an unmistakable presence. Its curves feel familiar and inviting, while the details reveal a wonderfully individual imagination. Angular inlays, delicate pearl, and sculpted ebony create a visual rhythm that carries from the headstock to the smallest appointments. Showcased at Fretboard Summit 2026, this is a guitar whose beauty invites you closer, and whose responsiveness gives you every reason to stay.

Josh Rieck brings a remarkably broad foundation to his work as a luthier. Beginning his formal training in 2002, he graduated with honors from the Guitar Repair and Construction program at Minnesota State College Southeast Technical in Red Wing. He subsequently founded String Theory Musical Instrument Repair and Custom Construction, repairing guitars for local music shops while building his own instruments. His experience expanded to violin family instruments, a master’s degree in double bass performance, and the study of historic instruments at the National Music Museum. His work in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, draws on that longstanding relationship with instruments as a builder, repair technician, and musician.

That attention to the musician finds a particularly lovely expression in this 00. Instantly responsive beneath the fingers, it gives delicate playing a sense of presence and purpose. The Western Red Cedar top brings an inviting warmth to its partnership with Madagascar Rosewood, a pairing beautifully suited to the intimacy and harmonic richness of fingerstyle music. Its wide dynamic range allows a phrase to gather strength naturally, moving from a soft, carefully placed note into a more expansive passage. Small changes in touch become part of the musical conversation, encouraging expressive phrasing and the patient exploration of a melody.

The cedar’s fine, closely spaced grain gives the top a quiet, almost silken appearance beneath its high gloss finish. Ebony bindings trace the rounded shoulders, narrow waist, and generous lower bout with a crisp dark outline. At the soundhole, the Madagascar Rosewood and mother of pearl pendant rosette offers a particularly elegant detail, its pale crescent of pearl suspended beneath the opening like a small piece of jewelry. Fine black, white, and black purfling completes the composition, while the sweeping fingerboard extension and angular wings of the African ebony bridge introduce a sculptural quality.

The back is equally captivating. Deep brown and reddish amber tones run through the Madagascar Rosewood, crossed by dark grain lines that lend the surface a sense of depth and movement. A slender partial ebony backstrip rises toward a tapered live edge koa crest, whose golden, rippling texture catches the light against the darker wood. That crest reappears on the African ebony headstock face, where its organic figure sits within a sharply defined outline. Above it, the mother of pearl logo shines against the polished ebony. Together, these details suggest the elegance of fine architectural ornament, rendered on an intimate scale.

Comfort is woven into the design. An ebony micro arm bevel softens the body’s edge beneath the picking arm, while the V2 vented soundport complements the guitar’s thoughtful appointments. The Honduran mahogany neck carries an African ebony fingerboard, with a 25" scale length, 1 3/4" nut width, and 2 1/4" bridge spacing providing an inviting layout for independent finger movement. A satin Osmo Polyx Oil neck finish offers a smooth tactile counterpart to the high gloss Ilva catalyzed urethane body.

Ebony bindings continue around the soundhole, fingerboard, and headstock, with African ebony veneers on both faces of the headstock and a magnetic ebony truss rod cover completing the presentation. Nickel Waverly tuning machines with ebony buttons offer precise 21:1 gearing, accompanied by a bone nut and saddle. Weighing 4 lb 5 oz and supplied with a Crossrock hardshell case, this J. Rieck 00 brings visual artistry and musical sensitivity into beautiful balance. It is an instrument for the player who finds a whole world of expression in the space between a whisper and a ringing chord.
