A beautiful sunburst, a comfortable small body, and the unmistakable character of Kevin Kopp’s work make this L-02 a particularly tempting guitar. Built with Engelmann spruce and Honduran mahogany, it brings together the warmth of a traditional American acoustic and the thoughtful craftsmanship of a deeply experienced independent luthier. With Kevin nearing retirement, this is among the very last brand new Kopp guitars we will have available at Eddie’s Guitars, making its arrival especially meaningful.
Kevin’s understanding of these instruments comes from decades spent building, repairing, and studying them. He moved to Bozeman, Montana, in 1992 to work for Gibson, soon joining the Custom Shop alongside Ren Ferguson and John Walker. During his decade there, he helped create exceptional custom instruments while developing the skills that would shape his own guitars. His subsequent restoration work brought vintage instruments to his bench from across North America and Japan, giving him an intimate understanding of their construction and the details behind their enduring appeal. That experience runs through the Kopp line, where familiar designs benefit from a builder’s lifetime of careful observation.
The L-02 draws on the beloved Gibson L-00 tradition, pairing a trim waist and inviting proportions with a voice that reaches comfortably beyond its modest size. Its appeal lies in the balance between intimacy and authority: a guitar that feels at home tucked into your lap, yet has the presence for much more than quiet accompaniment. The design is a natural fit for fingerstyle blues, ragtime, and melodic picking, with the clarity to keep moving bass lines and treble melodies distinct. It is equally appealing as a companion to the human voice, offering warmth and definition in a wonderfully manageable package.
Engelmann spruce is an especially attractive choice for this format, prized for its sensitivity to a lighter touch and its sweet, rounded character. Paired with Honduran mahogany, it favors an expressive combination of spruce sweetness and woody midrange focus. Adirondack spruce braces complete the soundboard construction, bringing a traditional material choice to Kevin’s carefully developed voicing. For a player who enjoys shaping a phrase with the fingertips, this combination holds considerable appeal.
The hand rubbed sunburst is gorgeous, glowing amber through the center before deepening into rich russet and dark brown around the edges. Its transparency allows the top’s grain to remain part of the picture, giving the color depth and texture. A bold tiger stripe pickguard adds a little attitude, while slender grained ivoroid binding traces the body’s curves. Around the back, the Honduran mahogany has a warm, burnished appearance, with subtle movement in the grain that rewards a closer look. Madagascar rosewood carries through the fingerboard, bridge, and headstock veneer, complementing the warm palette with its darker natural streaking.
Simple mother of pearl dot inlays and nickel Waverly tuning machines complete the restrained appointments. The 1 3/4 inch nut and generous 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing provide welcome room for articulate fingerwork, while the 14 fret neck joint offers familiar access up the neck. At just 3 pounds, 10 ounces, this L-02 is wonderfully light to hold and easy to settle in with for a long afternoon of playing. Supplied with a hard case, it offers a special opportunity to bring home a new instrument from a builder whose experience and individuality have made his guitars so cherished.
