The Iris WE is the newest model to emerge from Iris Guitars, an orchestra model with a familiar body shape and the unmistakable soul of a well loved vintage instrument. Named for longtime Iris employee Will Ehster, who played an important role in its design, the WE feels both personal and purposeful. Its graceful proportions, restrained appointments, and lightweight construction capture the honest, player focused character that has made Iris guitars so compelling.
This particular WE pairs a European spruce top with koa back and sides, creating a voice that is immediate, articulate, and beautifully colorful. European spruce brings sensitivity and nuance to the top, responding readily to a gentle touch while retaining the strength and clarity needed for more assertive playing. Scalloped Adirondack spruce bracing gives the soundboard freedom and energy, while the koa adds warmth, woody definition, and a sweet harmonic shimmer. The result is a balanced and expressive guitar with clear trebles, a focused bass, and an engaging midrange presence that allows individual notes and complex chords to speak with equal confidence.
Visually, the koa gives this WE a wonderfully organic elegance. Its lively grain and shifting color are framed by tortoise binding, while black, white, and black top purfling and a matching rosette preserve the simple vintage inspired aesthetic. The Indian rosewood fingerboard features a comfortable 16 inch radius, blind fret slots, and small plastic dot markers, while an Indian rosewood bar bridge with slanted pin holes and off white bridge pins completes the traditional presentation. Golden Age relic brass tuners with off white buttons and the Iris headstock logo provide the perfect finishing touches.
The mahogany neck is shaped with a comfortable C carve and joined to the body with a bolt on mortise and tenon neck joint. A 25.5 inch scale length, 1 11/16 inch nut width, and 2 3/16 inch bridge spacing give this WE a slightly more compact and streamlined feel in the hands, particularly well suited to players who prefer a familiar, close string spacing. A bone nut and saddle support clarity, sustain, and precise note definition.
At only 3 pounds 6 ounces, this Iris WE feels exceptionally light and alive, with the kind of responsiveness that makes the entire instrument seem to breathe beneath the player’s hands. Complete with a hard shell case, the European spruce and koa WE is a gorgeous and distinctive interpretation of Iris’s newest design, blending old soul, modern purpose, and the personal influence of one of the craftspeople who helped bring it to life.
