The Iris DF Sunburst is a guitar with its heart firmly planted in the golden age of American acoustic guitar building. The “DF” initials belong to Dale Fairbanks, master luthier and guitar designer for Iris Guitars, whose deep understanding of vintage instruments has helped give the Iris lineup its unmistakable old soul. Conceived as a slope shoulder dreadnought inspired by great prewar and wartime guitars, the DF captures the simplicity, warmth, and wonderfully unpretentious character of those originals while offering the consistency and playability of a beautifully made modern instrument.
There is something immediately right about the combination of an Adirondack Spruce soundboard and Mahogany back and sides in a guitar like this. Scalloped Adirondack Spruce tone bars allow the top to breathe freely, giving the DF a voice that is dry, woody, powerful, and remarkably responsive. The Mahogany adds warmth and fundamental clarity while the Adirondack brings headroom and dynamic range, creating a guitar that can move effortlessly from a light touch to an aggressive flatpick. Chords have that big, rolling slope shoulder presence, while individual notes remain clear, punchy, and full of character. It is an exceptionally satisfying combination for roots music, blues, country, folk, and just about anything that benefits from a guitar with genuine vintage inspired personality.
Visually, the DF Sunburst is gorgeous in exactly the way an old workhorse acoustic should be. The warm sunburst is complemented by Ivoroid binding, simple B/W/B top purfling and rosette, small plastic fingerboard dots, and a classic Celluloid Firestripe pickguard. The Flower headstock logo adds just enough ornamentation without disturbing the guitar's wonderfully restrained aesthetic. An open pore satin nitrocellulose finish keeps the look and feel organic while allowing the natural texture of the woods to remain part of the experience.
The Mahogany neck features a substantial Full C Shape carve that feels wonderfully traditional in the hand. Its Indian Rosewood fingerboard has a 16 inch radius with blind fret slots, while the Rosewood bar bridge features slanted pin holes and off white plastic bridge pins. A bone nut and saddle complete the traditional recipe. Golden Age Relic Brass tuning machines with off white buttons are a particularly fitting finishing touch, giving the instrument the appearance of something that could have stepped out of another era.
Construction includes a bolt on mortise and tenon neck joint, a 25 inch scale length, 1 3/4 inch nut width, and spacious 2 5/16 inch string spacing at the bridge. At just 3 pounds 11 ounces, the DF has the light, lively feel one hopes for from a vintage inspired slope shoulder. A TKL hard shell case is included.
The Iris DF does not simply borrow the appearance of an old guitar. Dale Fairbanks and Iris have distilled the qualities that make the best prewar and wartime slope shoulder dreadnoughts so addictive: lightness, immediacy, warmth, power, and an abundance of personality. The result is a beautifully honest guitar that feels familiar from the first chord and seems destined to become even better with every year it is played.
