This Custom OM brings together a Dark Forest Century Cypress soundboard and richly figured Cocobolo back and sides, creating an instrument that feels at once deeply rooted in tradition and unmistakably its own.
The Dark Forest Century Cypress top is the centerpiece. Sourced by Aaron Lucas of Dark Forest Cypress, this remarkable material comes from sinker cypress recovered from the waterways and forests of the American South. Lucas has built a reputation for seeking out extraordinary old growth material that possesses not only remarkable age and visual character, but genuine musical potential. His work has introduced some truly fascinating cypress to the world of high end guitar making, including specimens that have remained preserved for centuries or even millennia. Century Cypress offers a particularly interesting voice for an acoustic guitar, combining the quick response and immediacy often associated with cedar with a little more firmness, clarity, and headroom. There is an aged quality to its character that feels wonderfully appropriate on an instrument built with this much sensitivity.
Against the Century Cypress, Cocobolo makes a spectacular partner. Dense, powerful, and overtone rich, it can provide tremendous depth and sustain while maintaining a strong fundamental and brilliant clarity. Brian is hardly a newcomer stepping into an established shop. His years within Huss & Dalton have given him an intimate understanding of the instruments, the methods behind them, and the standards that made the Staunton, Virginia company so respected in the first place. Under his leadership, there is a genuine sense of continuity, but also the opportunity for Huss & Dalton to keep evolving rather than simply preserving what came before.
Visually, this OM Custom is gorgeous. Curly Koa binding surrounds the body, fingerboard, and headstock, providing a warm organic transition between the Century Cypress top and dramatic Cocobolo back and sides. Black, White, Black top purfling keeps the perimeter crisp and traditional, while an Abalone rosette and matching Abalone backstrip introduce flashes of color and light. The Cocobolo headstock veneer beautifully echoes the back and sides, and the Ebony fingerboard is appointed with Abalone Short Pattern Snowflakes. A Tortoise pickguard completes the vintage inspired face of the instrument.
An Ebony pyramid bridge lends another elegant traditional touch, while Gold Waverly tuning machines fitted with Snakewood buttons give the headstock a wonderfully refined finish.
