The Huss & Dalton OM Custom in Dark Forest Century Cypress and African Blackwood brings together a remarkable piece of reclaimed natural history with the precision and artistry of one of America’s most respected guitar builders. The Century Cypress soundboard comes from timber that spent part of its life submerged, naturally preserved beneath the water before being recovered and prepared for lutherie. It belongs to Dark Forest’s Century classification rather than its Ancient Cypress category, giving it a fascinating sinker lineage without placing it among the company’s material more than 1,500 years old.

That long period of submersion has given the Cypress a character unlike conventionally harvested soundboard wood. It is light, responsive, and wonderfully alive beneath the hands, with an immediate attack and an already relaxed quality that makes the guitar feel remarkably open from the first note. Cypress delivers clarity and speed, but there is also an earthy warmth within its voice, along with a dry, woody presence that preserves the identity of every note.

African Blackwood proves to be a spectacular partner. Dense, powerful, and highly reflective, it gives the Century Cypress a vast tonal foundation, adding deep bass, complex overtones, and long, luxurious sustain. The Cypress brings immediacy and definition, while the Blackwood contributes weight, color, and an almost orchestral sense of dimension. Together they produce a huge sound from the OM body, with tremendous projection, a broad dynamic range, and a richness that seems to extend far beyond the edges of the instrument. Fingerstyle passages shimmer with separation and detail, while a flatpick reveals muscular headroom and an unexpectedly commanding low end.

Adirondack Spruce bracing joined with hot hide glue allows the body to work as an exceptionally unified system, transferring energy quickly and giving the guitar a strong, articulate core. The 25.4 inch scale adds power and definition, while the 1 3/4 inch nut and spacious 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing create an inviting feel for expressive fingerstyle work. At 4 pounds 11 ounces, it possesses a substantial presence that feels perfectly matched to the depth and authority of its voice.
