Some guitars impress with their first chord. Others reveal their beauty slowly, drawing you deeper into the spaces between the notes. The Froggy Bottom Model M Deluxe in Adirondack red spruce and 5A Madagascar rosewood promises both kinds of fascination. Elegant in proportion and exquisite in detail, this grand concert brings together the strength of red spruce, the harmonic richness of exceptional rosewood, and a deeply personal tradition of craftsmanship.

That tradition begins with Michael Millard, whose first Froggy Bottom guitar took shape in 1970 while he was working with Michael Gurian in New York City. Over the decades, Michael developed a philosophy grounded in listening, both to the wood beneath his hands and to the musicians who would give it a voice. With his recent transition into retirement, he retains an emeritus role as the small, deeply experienced Froggy Bottom team carries that philosophy forward. These craftspeople have shared in the building, voicing, and continual refinement of the instruments for years. Their work preserves the intimacy and musical purpose that have always defined Froggy Bottom, while keeping alive Michael’s determination to make each guitar better than the last.

Adirondack red spruce and Madagascar rosewood offer a particularly compelling foundation for the Model M. Red spruce is prized for its strength, clear attack, and generous dynamic ceiling, giving a player room to move from delicate articulation into a more assertive touch. Madagascar rosewood brings the promise of depth, ringing sustain, and a beautifully layered harmonic character. Together, these woods offer a balance of definition and atmosphere, allowing individual notes to speak distinctly while surrounding them with a rich, lingering bloom.

Within the Model M’s comfortable grand concert proportions, this pairing is especially appealing for fingerstyle, chord melody, and expressive solo arrangements. The potential for clear separation beneath a lush harmonic canopy gives moving bass lines, inner voices, and singing melodies room to coexist. Red spruce also makes this an inviting choice for articulate flatpicking and dynamic accompaniment, particularly for the musician who wants power in reserve without moving to a larger body.

The appointments are every bit as thoughtful as the wood selection. Curly koa bindings and grafts bring warmth and figure to the instrument’s edges, complemented by a matching curly koa heel cap. Wild caught New Zealand paua abalone illuminates the rosette and backstrip with shifting ocean colors, while the bound headstock frames a solid 5A Madagascar rosewood veneer and the beloved frog logo in matching paua. Green abalone fleur de lis inlays in Froggy Bottom’s #3 pattern lend the Gabon ebony fingerboard a graceful, botanical elegance. A Gabon ebony pyramid bridge completes the composition with beautifully restrained traditional lines.

The Honduran mahogany neck meets the body at the 14th fret, with a 25.1 inch scale length, 1 3/4 inch nut width, and spacious 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing offering an inviting platform for intricate picking. A gently curved 20 inch fingerboard radius complements the layout, while high ratio nickel Waverly tuning machines provide precise adjustment. Ebony bridge pins and an ebony end pin, each accented with paua abalone dots, carry the decorative theme into the smallest details.

Weighing 4 pounds, 8 ounces, this Model M Deluxe includes a TKL American Vintage hardshell case, with its imitation tortoise shell pickguard supplied uninstalled inside. It is a beautiful expression of Froggy Bottom’s continuing story: extraordinary materials, patient hands, and a lasting belief that the finest guitar is one that helps its player discover something worth saying.
