The Bourgeois SJ C Multi Scale in Dark Forest Ancient Cypress and Roadkill Maple is a breathtaking collision of ancient history, ingenious design, and the kind of once in a lifetime tonewoods that may never be seen again. It is unmistakably Bourgeois, yet even within Dana Bourgeois’ extraordinary body of work, this guitar stands apart as something truly singular.

Dana Bourgeois has spent decades behind the bench refining the relationship between tonewood, structure, and musical response. As the founder of Bourgeois Guitars, he has become one of the most respected voices in modern acoustic guitar making, celebrated for instruments that blend traditional sensibilities with fearless innovation. Every detail of this SJ C reflects that accumulated knowledge, from its individually voiced construction and Aged Tone Adirondack Spruce torrefied bracing to its elegant ergonomics and sophisticated multi scale geometry.

The multi scale design employs a 25.5 inch scale on the bass side and a 25 inch scale on the treble side. This subtle fan fret arrangement gives the lower strings additional tension, definition, and authority while allowing the upper strings to feel supple, expressive, and easy beneath the fingers. Chords retain exceptional balance from the deepest bass note to the highest melody line, while alternate tunings benefit from the added stability and clarity of the longer bass scale. The angled frets also follow the natural arc of the player’s hand, creating a remarkably comfortable and intuitive playing experience. A Venetian cutaway and sculpted arm bevel make this generously voiced SJ body feel graceful and inviting.

Its soundboard is nothing short of astonishing. Harvested by Aaron Lucas of Dark Forest Cypress, this Ancient Cypress has been carbon dated at an incredible 3,758 years old. Material of this age and provenance carries a depth of character that cannot be replicated. Visually rich and historically extraordinary, it offers the quick response, warmth, and complexity associated with exceptional cypress while possessing a mature, haunting quality all its own. Supported by Aged Tone Adirondack Spruce torrefied bracing, the top is alive beneath the lightest touch yet retains the strength and headroom to respond beautifully when driven.

The Roadkill Maple back and sides have an equally remarkable story. James Witkus and James Cook of Bourgeois Guitars discovered the tree lying along the side of a road deep in Maine, partially hidden within a heavily wooded area. Recognizing that something special might be concealed beneath its weathered exterior, they pulled it from the woods and processed it themselves in the Bourgeois wood mill. What emerged was spectacular: maple with astonishing figure, movement, and coloration unlike anything they had encountered. A discarded roadside tree was transformed into the visual and tonal foundation of an heirloom instrument, making the name Roadkill Maple both wonderfully irreverent and completely unforgettable.

The maple contributes articulation, speed, and transparency, allowing the ancient cypress soundboard to speak with remarkable immediacy. An X braced back adds energy and projection, helping produce a voice that is expansive yet controlled, with a clear fundamental, vivid overtones, and exceptional separation across the entire register. At 4 pounds 7 ounces, the guitar feels substantial enough to inspire confidence while remaining lively and responsive in the hands.

The appointments are every bit as extraordinary as the tonewoods. Macassar Ebony binds the body, fingerboard, and headstock and appears again in the backstrip, floating box tail wedge, heel cap, multi scale belly bridge, fingerboard, and front and rear headstock veneers. Burl Tiles purfling frames the top and headstock, while the Odyssey Offset Burl rosette and Burl headstock logo introduce an organic visual language that beautifully complements the wild figure of the maple. The distinctive Multi Scale Snake headstock shape gives the instrument a dramatic silhouette without disturbing its refined elegance.

Black D TAR tuning machines with Ebony buttons complete the headstock, while bone bridge and end pins with black dots provide a classic finishing touch. The body and headstock receive a brilliant high gloss finish, contrasted by a smooth satin lacquer finish on the Curly Honduran Mahogany neck. A Signature Label identifies the instrument as one of Bourgeois’ most ambitious creations, and a fitted hardshell case is included.

With its 25.5 and 25 inch multi scale geometry, 1 3/4 inch nut width, and generous 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing, this SJ C offers superb comfort for fingerstyle playing, flatpicking, and expansive chord work alike. It is an instrument born from thousands of years of natural history, a remarkable roadside discovery in the Maine woods, and the vision of one of America’s greatest living guitar makers. Wild, elegant, and deeply musical, this Bourgeois is a genuine one of a kind masterpiece.
