The Atkin Dust Bowl Parlour Special in Medium Aged Honduran Mahogany feels like it was pulled straight out of a 1930s front porch session and handed to you with decades of music already in it. This is exactly the kind of instrument Alister Atkin set out to build when he founded Atkin Guitars in Canterbury, chasing the soul, dryness, and immediacy of pre-war American acoustics while keeping the playability modern players demand.
Built entirely from Honduran mahogany for the top, back, and sides, this guitar delivers a focused, woody voice with a strong fundamental and a quick, punchy response. It is intimate but not small sounding. The all-mahogany construction gives it that dry, bluesy bark that records beautifully and sits perfectly in a mix, whether you are fingerpicking or driving it with a flatpick. The pre-war scalloped bracing opens the top up even further, adding warmth and surprising headroom for a parlour body.
The Medium Aged finish is where Atkin really separates itself. The aged toned relic gloss nitrocellulose lacquer gives the guitar a played-in feel right out of the case, both visually and physically. It looks like a lifelong companion and responds like one too, with a looseness and resonance that new guitars often take years to develop.
Every detail stays true to the stripped-down Dust Bowl aesthetic. No binding, no purfling, no backstrip. Just pure function and tone. The Madagascar rosewood fretboard, bridge, and headstock overlay add a subtle touch of refinement, while the black maple black rosette and Atkin decal logo keep things period correct and understated.
The short 24 7/16 inch scale length and 1.77 inch nut width make it incredibly comfortable, especially for fingerstyle players. The mahogany neck with a two-way truss rod adjusted at the soundhole keeps setup simple and stable. Bone saddle, ebony nut, and nickel Gotoh tuners round out a spec sheet that balances vintage inspiration with modern reliability.
Lightweight at just 3 pounds 10 ounces and paired with an Atkin black case, this is a guitar you will actually want to keep within arm’s reach. It invites you to play, and more importantly, it makes you play differently. More feel, less effort, more music.
This is not just a parlour guitar. It is a time machine with a voice.
