Some guitars practically write the first riff for you. The C.F. Holcomb Coyote has that kind of presence, bringing together the earthy allure of a resonator, the attitude of an electric, and the unmistakable character of an instrument made by hand. Showcased at Fretboard Summit 2026, this Flamed Maple Top example pairs gorgeous natural figure with etched brass and a beautifully understated finish. It looks ready for a smoky blues club, a midnight recording session, or whatever wonderfully strange musical territory you feel like exploring.

Chris Holcomb brings an exceptional foundation to his craft. His education includes learning from Scott Walker, Rick Turner, Jeff Traugott, and Santa Cruz Guitar Company founder Richard Hoover, an extraordinary group of builders whose work spans acoustic refinement and electric innovation. Having participated in the construction of hundreds of instruments, Chris draws on that experience while developing ideas distinctly his own. The Coyote captures that independent spirit beautifully, with traditional resonator mechanics finding a fresh home in an electric guitar design.

At the heart of the Coyote’s appeal is its combination of solid body electric construction and a working resonator cone. The handmade biscuit bridge transfers string energy into the resonator, while the Righteous Sound Coyote pickup brings the instrument into the amplified world. That unusual pairing opens an inviting path for expressive slide work, gritty fingerpicked blues, rootsy rhythm playing, and adventurous electric textures. Think winding melodies, percussive riffs, and chords allowed to linger beneath a generous wash of reverb. This is a design that encourages you to follow your ears.

The flamed maple top gives this example a striking visual rhythm, its rippling figure lending movement to the instrument’s face. An iron acetate stain and Osmo finish bring an organic, earthy character to the presentation, while the mahogany back and tortoise binding provide a handsome complement. The etched brass cover plate is the centerpiece, lending the guitar the charm of an beautifully crafted mechanical object. Indian rosewood control knobs complete the picture with a small but wonderfully thoughtful touch, carrying the warmth of the wood into the electronics themselves.

A mahogany neck and Indian rosewood fingerboard provide a familiar foundation beneath the hands, with a 25.5 inch scale length offering ample room for articulate fretted passages and expressive slide phrasing. Rubner tuning machines complete the instrument, while master volume and master tone controls keep its operation immediate and intuitive. At 6 pounds, 2 ounces, this Coyote also makes a compelling companion for long stretches of musical exploration.

There is something deeply appealing about a guitar with this much individuality. Beautiful wood, expressive metalwork, a handmade bridge, and a distinctive electric resonator design all come together with a clear sense of purpose. The C.F. Holcomb Coyote is full of personality before you ever reach for the cable. Plug it in, find a riff, and give that personality somewhere to go.
