The Jeff Jewitt JJ Small Jumbo brings together a graceful, compact outline and a richly appointed custom build, shaped by a maker whose life in guitar finishing and lutherie gives him an unusually complete command of the instrument. Jeff began building guitars from scratch in 1987, drawing on his background in studio art and his deepening study of the craft. Alongside his work as a luthier, he founded Homestead Finishing Products and developed TransFast and TransTint wood dyes, now used by guitar makers and finishers throughout the industry. He has also written extensively about finishing and taught the craft to woodworkers and luthiers. That rare combination of artistic eye, material knowledge, and hands-on experience is beautifully reflected in this JJ Small Jumbo.
The AAA Swiss Moon Spruce top offers a strikingly clean, luminous counterpart to the deep color and intricate figure of the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Triple laminated sides add a considered touch to the construction, while black, flamed maple, and black purflings frame the top and back with crisp definition. The purple dyed burl maple mosaic rosette brings a vivid, unexpected flash of color to the soundboard, and the Macassar Ebony fingerboard and bridge lend the design a poised, dark elegance. Ebony body binding, an ebony armrest, and an ebony backstrip carry that theme around the instrument, complemented by Brazilian Rosewood veneers on both sides of the headstock.
Up close, the details reward a longer look: Jeff’s white Mother of Pearl logo and cat-eye inlays, Gotoh 510 tuners in Cosmo Black with Macassar Ebony buttons, a magnetic Brazilian Rosewood truss rod cover, Jescar EVO Gold frets, and ebony bridge pins. The extra generous Florentine cutaway gives the JJ a bold silhouette and comfortable access to the upper frets.
