Showcased at the 2026 Fretboard Summit, this Iris WE is a distinctive expression of the newest model from Iris Guitars. Named for longtime Iris employee Will Ehster, who played an important role in its design, the WE is an orchestra model built around a familiar and enduring body shape. Its graceful proportions, honest appointments, and unmistakable vintage spirit make it feel immediately comfortable, while an unusual pairing of yellow cedar and black locust gives this particular instrument a voice and personality all its own.

The yellow cedar top brings warmth, sensitivity, and a smooth, immediate response. It possesses the inviting character associated with cedar while retaining a pleasing clarity and definition, allowing individual notes to emerge with a rounded attack and rich musical color. Scalloped Adirondack spruce bracing gives the soundboard room to breathe, adding energy and dynamic range beneath the player’s touch.

Black locust back and sides provide a fascinating complement to the yellow cedar. Dense and lively, black locust contributes projection, focus, and a clear fundamental presence, along with a bright harmonic character that keeps the warmth of the top beautifully defined. The result is an expressive and balanced voice with a firm low end, articulate trebles, and a colorful midrange that works equally well for fingerstyle playing, rhythmic accompaniment, and melodic flatpicking.

The visual presentation is wonderfully restrained, allowing the natural character of the woods to remain at the center. Ivoroid binding frames the body with a classic touch, while black, white, and black top purfling and a matching rosette add crisp vintage detail. The flower headstock logo lends a subtle flourish, complemented by Golden Age relic brass tuners with off white buttons. An Indian rosewood fingerboard with a 16 inch radius, blind fret slots, and small plastic dot markers continues the understated aesthetic, while the Indian rosewood bar bridge features traditional slanted pin holes and off white bridge pins.

The mahogany neck is shaped with a comfortable C carve and joined to the body with a bolt on mortise and tenon neck joint. Its 25.5 inch scale length gives the strings a lively, defined feel, while the 1 11/16 inch nut width and 2 3/16 inch bridge spacing create a streamlined playing experience that will feel immediately natural to players who prefer closer string spacing. A bone nut and saddle support clarity, sustain, and a clean transfer of energy throughout the instrument.

At 4 pounds 5 ounces, this Iris WE feels substantial yet responsive, with a strong sense of resonance beneath the hands. Complete with a hard shell case, the Yellow Cedar and Black Locust WE is a compelling showcase of Iris’s willingness to explore uncommon materials without losing sight of the simple, soulful character at the heart of the brand. It is warm, articulate, visually elegant, and unmistakably individual.
