The Goodall Crossover Cutaway Nylon in German Spruce and Palo Escrito invites a different kind of conversation between player and instrument. There is warmth in its voice, light in its trebles, and a beautiful sense of space around each note. Showcased at Fretboard Summit 2026, this elegant guitar brings together a Master Grade German Spruce soundboard, AAA Palo Escrito back and sides, and the graceful accessibility of a Venetian cutaway. It is an instrument that welcomes familiar melodies and encourages you to hear them anew.

That spirit of discovery has guided James Goodall since he built his first guitar in 1972. Already an accomplished seascape painter, James traded one of his paintings for tonewoods and began a journey that would help shape the landscape of contemporary American guitar making. Across more than five decades behind the bench, his work has become known for its individual character, meticulous refinement, and extraordinary musical richness. His artistic sensibility lives in the flowing proportions of his instruments and in voices that give equal attention to the clarity of a single note and the beauty of everything surrounding it.

His son, Luke Goodall, shares that pursuit with the experience and conviction of a luthier who grew up within the craft. From childhood days helping around the workshop to building instruments full time since 2004, Luke has developed a practiced eye for detail, symmetry, and the subtle relationships that make a guitar feel complete. He brings both a deep respect for his father’s work and a personal commitment to carrying the company forward. With James and Luke at the bench and Jean Goodall tending to the business, every instrument remains closely connected to the family whose name it carries.

The Crossover gives that shared vision a wonderfully expressive nylon voice. Its design brings together the warmth and texture of a classical guitar with proportions and access that feel inviting to players accustomed to steel strings. Goodall’s approach emphasizes balance, allowing bass notes to provide a full, resonant foundation while melodies rise clearly above them. Chords blend beautifully, and sustained notes lend continuity to flowing passages. Delicate finger work, lyrical chord melodies, and gentle strumming all find a natural home here.

The wood pairing is particularly well suited to that musical range. Master Grade German Spruce provides a soundboard prized for its combination of lightness and stiffness, offering a foundation for nuanced response and dynamic expression. AAA Palo Escrito brings the rich tone and quick response that make this Mexican rosewood a favorite of Goodall’s for nylon instruments. Together, these materials suggest a voice with warmth, definition, and an engaging immediacy, where subtle changes in touch can become meaningful changes in color.

Its visual character is equally thoughtful. Rosewood body binding outlines the guitar’s curves, while a fully mitered rosewood backstrip adds a beautifully finished detail to the back. The warm color of the Padauk rosette provides a striking focal point against the spruce. Slotted mother of pearl diamond inlays illuminate the ebony fingerboard, complemented by an ebony bridge and headstock veneer. Classical Der Jung tuning machines with rosewood buttons complete the headstock with an understated elegance that suits the instrument beautifully.

A satin finished mahogany neck offers a smooth, comfortable feel, with a 1 7/8" nut width providing room for deliberate articulation. The 25.5" scale length, 14 fret neck joint, and Venetian cutaway create an inviting platform for exploring the fingerboard, including melodic ideas that reach into the upper register. A bone nut and saddle complete the playing specifications.

Weighing just 3 lb 15 oz and accompanied by an Ameritage case with humidity control, this Crossover feels especially suited to long, unhurried sessions. Its beauty draws you in, its responsiveness rewards your attention, and its voice leaves room for your own musical personality to emerge.
