A glowing tobacco sunburst, a bold firestripe pickguard, and a remarkably light 3 pounds, 7 ounces in the hands make this Fairbanks F-35 1934 Jumbo an especially tempting instrument for anyone who loves a great vintage acoustic. With its Sitka spruce top, Honduran mahogany back and sides, and generous 1934 Jumbo body depth, it brings together the materials and proportions that helped define the American slope shoulder guitar. There is a wonderful sense of familiarity here, from the small Madagascar rosewood bridge to the creamy ivoroid binding, with each detail contributing to an instrument that looks ready for a lifetime of music.

Dale Fairbanks came to guitar building with a musician’s ear and a deep affection for the instruments behind early American blues and ragtime. He began playing trumpet at nine, went on to study at Berklee College of Music, and performed on trumpet and saxophone in jazz and Latin bands throughout southern New England. Around the turn of the century, that musical curiosity led him to build his first guitar. More than two decades of experimentation and dedication followed, with the elusive character of great prewar instruments guiding his work. His approach reflects a player’s interest in what makes a guitar compelling to pick up, alongside a craftsman’s fascination with how it was made.

The 1934 Jumbo’s body depth is central to its appeal. Its depth remains nearly consistent from the neck block to the tail, a feature Fairbanks associates with a stronger bass response than the standard F-35. Here, a Sitka spruce soundboard supported by Adirondack red spruce braces pairs with Honduran mahogany for a traditional recipe suited to a woody, substantial voice with plenty of rhythmic authority. It is an inviting combination for alternating bass blues, country accompaniment, and strong acoustic rhythm, particularly for players who want some weight beneath the melody.

The finish deserves a long look. Across the top, a concentrated pool of golden amber fades through warm reddish brown into dark tobacco edges. The full sunburst treatment continues over the mahogany back, sides, and neck, revealing the wood’s grain beneath its rich shading. Fine checking in the aged nitro lacquer adds convincing texture, while the orange and black firestripe pickguard supplies a lively flash of color. Ivoroid binding outlines both the body and fingerboard, setting off the darker woods with a clean, warm contrast.

The Honduran mahogany neck features an Easy V profile, paired with a 24.75-inch scale for a comfortably compact playing feel. A 1 3/4-inch nut and generous 2 5/16-inch bridge spacing provide welcome room for fingerstyle work. The Madagascar rosewood fingerboard shows beautiful natural streaking beneath simple mother of pearl dot inlays, while the matching bridge keeps the appearance grounded in tradition. An ebony headstock veneer carries the familiar Fairbanks script, complemented by nickel Waverly tuning machines with grained ivoroid buttons.

Supplied with a TKL hardshell case, this F-35 1934 Jumbo is a beautifully considered choice for the guitarist drawn to early blues, folk, country, and the enduring charm of a dark sunburst slope shoulder. Its unusually low weight, spacious string spacing, and handsome aged finish make the invitation especially hard to resist. This is a guitar to keep close, leave within reach, and build a repertoire around.
