The Fairbanks F-20 Aged Ebony is a wonderfully evocative guitar, built with the look, feel, and voice of a treasured vintage instrument that has already lived a rich musical life. Dale Fairbanks has spent decades studying, handling, repairing, and restoring exceptional guitars from the golden age of American instrument making. That intimate experience informs every guitar he builds. Rather than merely copying the outward details of the past, Dale understands how the finest vintage instruments were constructed, how lightly they were built, and how their materials and architecture work together to create an open and deeply expressive voice.
Beneath its beautifully worn Aged Ebony finish, the F-20 pairs an Adirondack spruce top with Honduran mahogany back and sides, reinforced by Adirondack red spruce braces. It is a timeless combination with a dry, woody fundamental, quick response, and tremendous clarity. The guitar feels alive beneath the hands, offering a crisp and immediate attack that gives way to a warm, airy bloom. Individual notes carry remarkable definition, while chords possess the loose, seasoned character associated with an old guitar that has been played for generations. At only 3 pounds 6 ounces, the F-20 feels exceptionally light and responsive, translating even a delicate touch into a full and colorful voice.
The short 24 3/4 inch scale contributes a comfortable, supple feel, while the soft V neck profile, 1 3/4 inch nut, and generous 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing make this an inviting instrument for fingerstyle playing, blues, ragtime, and expressive flatpicking. Its 14 fret neck joint provides familiar access and versatility without sacrificing the compact immediacy that makes this body style so compelling.
The Madagascar rosewood fingerboard and bridge provide an elegant contrast to the dark finish, joined by an ebony headstock veneer, mother of pearl dot inlays, and grained ivoroid body binding. A firestripe celluloid pickguard and relic nickel Waverly tuning machines with ivoroid buttons complete the vintage presentation. The relic nitrocellulose lacquer is especially convincing, lending the Aged Ebony finish the softened sheen and understated wear of an instrument discovered in a perfectly preserved old case.
Complete with a TKL hard case, the Fairbanks F-20 Aged Ebony is far more than a tribute to the past. It is Dale Fairbanks’ deeply informed interpretation of what made those old guitars so captivating in the first place: featherlight construction, effortless response, honest materials, and a voice filled with warmth, texture, and soul.
