The 2025 Bourgeois Slope D Banjo Killer brings the bold, quick response of a great bluegrass guitar together with the depth and refinement that have made Dana Bourgeois one of the most respected luthiers of his generation. Founder and master luthier of Bourgeois Guitars, Dana has spent decades at the bench refining his approach to tone, balance, and responsiveness. The Banjo Killer earned its name the first time legendary bluegrasser Bryan Sutton played the Slope D and declared, “This is a banjo killer!” The nickname captures the guitar’s clear purpose: to deliver the cutting projection and rhythmic authority that can hold its own in a bluegrass ensemble.
An Aged Tone torrefied Adirondack spruce top meets figured Cuban mahogany back and sides for a striking pairing of headroom, warmth, and definition. Double scalloped Adirondack braces, developed specifically for the Banjo Killer, help give the large slope-shouldered dreadnought a lively attack and powerful voice. It has the presence to drive a hard flatpicked lead, while the mahogany brings focus and a satisfying, woody depth to chords and runs.
The understated elegance of the build is carried through in grained ivoroid body and fingerboard binding, distinctive Banjo Killer top purfling, a wood rings rosette, and Dana Bourgeois’s signature backstrip. Figured mahogany accents the endpiece, while the Bourgeois snake headstock shape frames a Madagascar rosewood veneer and mother of pearl logo. Madagascar rosewood is also used for the fretboard and belly bridge, complemented by tiny mother of pearl dot inlays, a celluloid tortoise pickguard, nickel Waverly tuners with ivoroid buttons, and ebony pins with pearl dots. Finished with a satin neck, high gloss headstock and body, and supplied in a hard case, this 4 lb 11 oz Slope D pairs its bluegrass-ready voice with the character and craftsmanship of a Bourgeois original.
