Warm amber spruce, rich Brazilian rosewood, and the graceful proportions of an Orchestra Model give this 2021 Santa Cruz 1934 OM a presence that feels timeless. Originally sold through Eddie’s Guitars, this beautiful instrument returns to us after five years with its original owner. It brings together extraordinary materials, traditional construction, and the thoughtful craftsmanship that makes Santa Cruz such a compelling voice in the world of acoustic guitars.
At the heart of its appeal is the old growth Brazilian rosewood, harvested in the 1930s. Brazilian rosewood of fine instrument quality is already scarce, and surviving stocks of this caliber with such an early harvest date occupy a particularly rare corner of the guitar world. This wood had decades to season before becoming part of this instrument, giving the guitar a tangible connection to the era that inspired its design. Its beauty is wonderfully understated: warm tobacco and chestnut hues, fine dark grain lines, and gently shifting patterns that draw the eye inward toward the delicate zipper backstrip. There is tremendous character here, expressed through the wood itself.
The Moon spruce top makes an inspired partner for these remarkable back and sides. Together, they form a particularly appealing foundation for an OM built around sensitivity, tonal depth, and musical expression. Beneath the soundboard, prewar advanced X scalloped Adirondack spruce braces and hot hide glue construction carry the traditional approach into the structure of the instrument. For players drawn to nuanced fingerstyle, melodic flatpicking, and expressive accompaniment, the combination of these materials and the versatile OM format holds considerable promise.
Visually, the Vintage Varnish top tint gives the spruce a honeyed glow, revealing its fine grain beneath a fully buffed nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Grained ivoroid bindings trace the body, fingerboard, and headstock, while the Purfle Combo top border provides a crisp, intricate frame. A Brazilian rosewood rosette echoes the warmth of the back and sides, and the richly mottled Dalmatian pickguard adds a lively accent against the golden soundboard. Every detail feels considered, with enough ornament to reward a closer look while allowing the woods to remain the focal point.
The ebony fingerboard offers an especially clean presentation, with black side position markers and a mother of pearl SCGC logo at the 16th fret. Brazilian rosewood dresses the headstock, complemented by nickel Waverly tuning machines. An ebony belly bridge and cut through long saddle complete the traditional appearance. The V neck profile, 25.25 inch scale length, 1 3/4 inch nut width, and 2 3/16 inch bridge spacing provide a classic playing configuration, while its weight of just 3 pounds 15 ounces adds to the appeal of this comfortably proportioned instrument.
This guitar has been played extensively by its sole owner and remains in excellent overall condition, with superficial finish scuffs, light top dings, light fret wear, and a ding on the corner of the headstock. The bridge was recently reglued to address a very slight lift. The accompanying photographs document the visible wear, and the guitar includes its original Ameritage hardshell case.
With its rare 1930s harvested Brazilian rosewood, glowing Moon spruce top, and familiar history here at Eddie’s, this Santa Cruz offers a deeply appealing meeting of provenance, craftsmanship, and musical possibility. Its next chapter belongs in the hands of someone ready to keep the music going.
