There are three open Ds in DADGAD, and this 2015 Michael Greenfield G2.2 gives each one a color of its own. Sound the sixth, fourth and first strings in succession. The lowest D has the roundness of a cello, the middle D rings with a woody sweetness, and the highest hangs like a bell above them both. Leave those strings ringing and move a single note through the chord. Even as the overtones gather into an orchestral swell, you can follow that quiet melody all the way to the end of the phrase.
Michael completed this grand auditorium, No. 240, in his Montréal workshop in April 2015. He began repairing electric guitars as a working musician in the 1970s. When prewar Martins and Gibsons later began crossing his bench, he studied guitar making with Bryan Galloup to better understand the instruments in his care. Michael calls his approach “Acoustic Intent.” Whether building a harp guitar for Andy McKee or working out how much scale length a low D needs, he begins with the sound a player wants to hear.
The pale gold soundboard is Master Grade Alpine spruce, moon harvested in the tradition of felling select trees as the winter moon wanes. Michael paired it with Reserve Grade Amazon rosewood, a rare find in sets broad enough for a grand auditorium. On the back, nearly black grain feathers through the deep russet wood on either side of the center seam. The spruce gives a softly picked note a clear, immediate beginning, while the rosewood lends it body and a long, harmonically rich decay. A hybrid lattice braces the soundboard, and the radially braced back incorporates Greenfield’s proprietary Tone Halo. Michael laminated the Amazon rosewood sides with East Indian rosewood to give those two resonant plates a rigid rim to work against.
The fanned frets give the bass strings a full 26.25 inches of scale, tapering to 25.4 inches at the treble. The low D feels firm beneath the thumb, while the first string yields easily to a little vibrato. Michael hand carved the Honduran mahogany neck, reinforced it with carbon graphite and gave it a satin finish. The quartersawn ebony fingerboard has a compound radius that flattens from 16 to 20 inches. A 1¾ inch nut and 2¼ inch string spacing at the bridge give both hands room for fingerstyle work, and the Florentine cutaway opens the upper register beyond the 14th fret neck joint.
Around the soundhole, the dark tracery of spalted beech looks almost inked by hand. Two fine rings of pāua heart frame it in flashes of blue and green. Fine purflings of maple, black and purple follow the ebony binding into the sharp point of the cutaway. Grit Laskin’s influence shows in the sculpted ebony armrest and rib rest, and Steve Klein’s in the swept wings of the pinless ebony bridge. The body and headstock are buffed to a full gloss. A lowercase mother of pearl “g” catches the light against the ebony headstock face, with Amazon rosewood on the reverse and gold Gotoh 510 tuners with black buttons.
No. 240 is in excellent condition and plays beautifully. A recent full setup included fitting a new unbleached bone nut to match the original it replaced. The guitar weighs 5 lb 9 oz and comes to its next steward in its custom carbon fiber Accord flight case.
