With its sweeping curves, luminous shell appointments, and spectacular Brazilian rosewood, this Kevin Ryan Cathedral Signature Series Grand Fingerstyle captures the artistry that makes a fine Ryan so immediately recognizable. Built in 2006, it pairs Engelmann spruce with Brazilian rosewood in an instrument whose visual richness beautifully complements the Cathedral’s generous musical proportions. The golden warmth of the soundboard, the intricate grain of the back, and the shifting blues and greens of the paua create a composition that rewards a closer look from every angle.

The Signature Series represents an especially personal expression of Kevin Ryan’s craft. Conceived around extraordinary tonewoods, exceptional soundboards, and individually selected decorative details, these instruments bring together the musical and aesthetic possibilities of a custom Ryan at a particularly elevated level. Their appeal lies in the relationship between those elements: the choice of wood, the elegance of the inlay, the comfort of the instrument, and the expressive range its design offers the player. This Cathedral embodies that philosophy with a striking combination of natural beauty and meticulous ornamentation.

Engelmann spruce is a lovely choice for this grand fingerstyle platform, prized for its sensitivity to a light touch, sweet tonal character, and inviting response. Paired with Brazilian rosewood, it offers a compelling foundation for the depth, harmonic complexity, and lingering resonance that make an expansive acoustic voice so captivating. The Brazilian rosewood here is visually extraordinary, with flowing black grain tracing dramatic patterns through shades of cinnamon, amber, and deep brown. Its beautifully mirrored figure gives the broad back a sense of movement, while the spruce presents a warm, quietly luminous contrast.

As Ryan’s largest body design, the Cathedral combines a generous lower bout with a more compact upper bout, balancing its substantial acoustic presence with thoughtful proportions. The model is known for deep bass, remarkable sustain, and clear articulation, qualities that lend themselves beautifully to layered fingerstyle arrangements and open tunings. This example’s sculpted Florentine cutaway provides access to the upper register, while the Macassar ebony Ryan Ergonomic Bevel creates a comfortable resting surface for the picking arm. The bevel’s flowing grain also adds another beautiful dimension to the instrument’s silhouette.

An ebony binding theme frames the body, with blue paua soundboard purfling following its graceful outline and a matching blue paua rosette surrounding the soundhole. Across the ebony fingerboard, intricate Triquetra inlays introduce an elegant interwoven motif. Blue paua and mother of pearl MicroPearl purflings trace the fingerboard and headstock, their delicate detail especially striking against the dark ebony. Kevin Ryan’s signature appears in mother of pearl on the headstock, while the truss rod cover carries the distinctive SS 044 designation. Gold Gotoh Super 510 tuning machines with black buttons complete the presentation with a warm metallic accent.

The Honduran mahogany neck is paired with a 1.75" nut width and 2.25" bridge spacing, offering comfortable room for articulate fingerstyle work. Ryan’s extended 25.7" scale provides a purposeful feel beneath the fingers and is particularly appealing for players who explore lowered tunings. An ebony bridge and headstock veneers continue the dark wood theme, while a bone nut, saddle, and bridge pins complete the string bearing appointments. A clear pickguard preserves the visual continuity of the Engelmann soundboard, and the guitar weighs 4 pounds, 15 ounces.

This Cathedral is in very good used condition and plays beautifully. It was recently checked over by Ryan Guitars and given a clean bill of health. Cosmetic wear includes light surface scuffs on the clear pickguard, a small finish crack on the back that does not extend into the wood, some light finish sinking near the top purfling, and a finish ding on the headstock. These details are shown in the accompanying photographs. Complete with a Calton flight case, this is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy an individually appointed Signature Series Ryan, with exceptional woods, graceful craftsmanship, and the expansive musical possibilities of the Cathedral Grand Fingerstyle.
