The Collings DS2A Hill Country Sunburst brings a deeply traditional voice to the newest model in the Hill Country Series. Its broad, twelve fret dreadnought design seems to gather the entire guitar around the player, producing a sound that is expansive, warm, and remarkably alive. An Adirondack spruce top provides tremendous strength and dynamic range, while East Indian rosewood adds lush overtones, powerful bass, and a lingering, piano like sustain. The Hill Country sunburst gives the instrument the weathered elegance of a treasured vintage guitar, beautifully complemented by ivoroid body binding, a hand poured tortoise pickguard, and matching material at the rosette, wedge, and heel cap.

The Hill Country Series represents one of the most meaningful chapters in the continuing story of Collings Guitars. The late Bill Collings built his reputation through relentless curiosity, uncompromising precision, and an instinctive understanding of how structure shapes sound. His instruments established a standard that forever changed the modern acoustic guitar world. Today, his legacy is carried forward by the craftspeople he trained and inspired, not simply by preserving his methods, but by continuing the pursuit of greater responsiveness, character, and musical depth that defined his life’s work. Hill Country construction and voicing explore a looser, more organic side of the Collings sound, with an ultra thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish and a specially developed scalloped X brace pattern without a tongue brace. The result is a guitar with the clarity and balance expected from Collings, but with a more relaxed attack, open resonance, and beautifully seasoned personality.

The DS2A pairs its Adirondack top with Sitka spruce bracing and a full East Indian rosewood body measuring 15 5/8 inches wide, 20 7/8 inches long, and 4 7/8 inches deep. Its 25 1/2 inch scale and 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing give the strings room to drive the top, while the twelve fret geometry encourages a rich fundamental and effortless bloom. The ebony belly style bridge features an aged bone cutthrough saddle and ebony pins, creating a direct and articulate connection between the strings and soundboard. A traditional 2 style zipper backstrip adds another understated vintage detail.

The Honduran mahogany neck is carved from a comfortable C into a modified V, with gently rounded fingerboard edges that make the guitar feel inviting from the first chord. Its bound ebony fingerboard carries gold mother of pearl short diamonds and squares, along with a modern 14 to 26 inch compound radius that supports comfortable chording and clean movement across the neck. An aged bone nut measures 1 3/4 inches, while the mortise and tenon hybrid neck joint, fully adjustable truss rod, and medium nickel silver frets provide the stability and precision expected of a Collings.

The square ebony faced peghead is left beautifully unadorned on the front, with the Collings name discreetly stamped into the back. Relic nickel Waverly tuners complete the restrained, old world presentation. Finished in high gloss ultra thin nitrocellulose lacquer across both the body and neck, strung with D’Addario EJ16 strings, and weighing 4 pounds 8 ounces, the DS2A Hill Country is substantial without feeling heavy. Its voice is deep and enveloping, yet never sluggish, with rosewood richness, Adirondack authority, and the looseness and breath of a truly exceptional vintage instrument. Supplied with a deluxe hardshell case, this is a compelling continuation of Bill Collings’ legacy and one of the most soulful guitars yet to emerge from the Hill Country Series.
