The Iris WE is the newest model from Iris Guitars, an orchestra model with a familiar and timeless body shape, named for longtime Iris employee Will Ehster. Having played an important role in the design of the guitar, Ehster’s influence gives the WE a personal connection to the people behind Iris and the wonderfully soulful instruments they create. It is comfortable, responsive, and beautifully understated, with the presence of an old guitar and the energy of a completely new design.
This distinctive WE pairs a redwood top with walnut back and sides, then gives the soundboard a gorgeous sunburst finish that deepens from a warm amber center into richly shaded edges. The burst brings out the organic character of the redwood and gives the guitar the appearance of a carefully preserved vintage instrument. Tortoise body binding complements the warm palette beautifully, while black, white, and black top purfling and a matching rosette add crisp, restrained definition.
Redwood is prized for its sensitivity and warmth, offering a quick response and an ability to reveal the smallest changes in a player’s touch. Scalloped Adirondack spruce braces support the top with strength and vitality, allowing the guitar to feel open and alive without sacrificing clarity. Walnut back and sides bring focus, woody warmth, and an earthy midrange character, with a pleasing balance between the directness of mahogany and the overtone richness associated with rosewood. Together, redwood and walnut give this WE a deeply musical voice with warm fundamentals, clear articulation, and a sweet, lingering harmonic presence.
The mahogany neck features a modified V carve that gives the guitar a comfortable vintage inspired feel, with enough definition to settle naturally into the hand. Its Indian rosewood fingerboard has a 16 inch radius, blind fret slots, and small plastic dot markers, continuing the clean and traditional Iris aesthetic. An Indian rosewood bar bridge with slanted pin holes, off white bridge pins, and a bone nut and saddle contribute to the guitar’s clarity, sustain, and immediate response. Golden Age relic brass tuners with off white buttons and the Iris headstock logo complete the aged, understated presentation.
A 25.5 inch scale length provides excellent definition and headroom, while the 1 3/4 inch nut width and generous 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing create an open and accommodating playing surface for fingerstyle work, flatpicking, and intricate chord voicings. The bolt on mortise and tenon neck joint offers a stable and practical foundation for years of playing.
Weighing only 3 pounds 7 ounces and accompanied by a hard shell case, this Iris WE feels remarkably light, resonant, and alive in the hands. With its glowing sunburst, responsive redwood top, and warm walnut voice, it is a particularly soulful expression of the newest Iris design, rich with vintage character and built to inspire from the very first note.
