Showcased at the 2026 Fretboard Summit, the Iris AB is a deeply personal addition to the Iris lineup. Named for Adam Buchwald, founder of both Circle Strings and Iris Guitars, the AB reflects the vision of a builder whose work has helped define two distinct sides of modern American guitar making. Its small jumbo body offers the power and dimensionality of a larger instrument while retaining the responsiveness, balance, and comfort that make an Iris so immediately inviting.

This exceptional AB pairs a redwood top with Macassar ebony back and sides, an inspired combination of warmth, depth, and striking clarity. Redwood responds effortlessly to the lightest touch, producing a smooth attack, rich fundamentals, and a mature warmth that can make a new guitar feel remarkably seasoned. Scalloped Adirondack spruce bracing gives the soundboard strength and freedom, allowing it to move with sensitivity while preserving the headroom needed for more assertive playing.

Macassar ebony brings authority and definition to the voice. Dense and highly reflective, it contributes a firm low end, brilliant trebles, and a complex harmonic presence that expands around each note. Paired with redwood, it creates a sound that is lush without becoming indistinct, with the warmth of the top balanced by the focus and projection of the back and sides. The small jumbo body adds breadth and physical presence, giving chords a wide, immersive quality while allowing melodic lines to remain clear and beautifully separated.

Visually, the guitar balances natural drama with the understated character of Iris. The deep color and dramatic striping of the Macassar ebony create a bold contrast against the warmth of the redwood top. Black binding frames the body cleanly, while black, white, and black top purfling and a matching rosette provide crisp traditional detail. The flower headstock logo adds a graceful signature, complemented by Golden Age relic brass tuners with off white buttons.

A mahogany neck with a comfortable C shape carve gives the AB a familiar and welcoming feel. The Indian rosewood fingerboard features a 16 inch radius, blind fret slots, and small plastic dot markers, preserving the simple vintage inspired aesthetic. An Indian rosewood bar bridge with slanted pin holes, off white bridge pins, and a bone nut and saddle completes a purposeful design built around tone, response, and long term playability. The bolt on mortise and tenon neck joint provides a stable and practical foundation.

With a 25.5 inch scale length, 1 3/4 inch nut width, and spacious 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing, the AB offers an open and accommodating playing surface for fingerstyle work, flatpicking, alternate tunings, and expansive chord voicings. Remarkably light for a small jumbo at only 3 pounds 9 ounces, it feels vibrant and alive against the player.

Complete with a hard shell case, the Iris AB in Redwood and Macassar Ebony is a fitting tribute to Adam Buchwald and the creative vision behind Iris Guitars. Powerful yet sensitive, richly harmonic yet articulate, it is a beautifully distinctive small jumbo with the voice of a serious performance instrument and the unpretentious soul that makes Iris guitars so compelling.
