The Santa Cruz Founder Collection Vintage Southerner is a celebration of everything that has made Santa Cruz Guitar Company one of the most respected names in modern acoustic guitar building. Created in honor of the company’s 50th Anniversary, the Founder Collection is a limited time series devoted to the classic Santa Cruz models and standard specifications that helped define its legacy. Rather than reinventing these instruments, Santa Cruz has returned to their essential character, allowing the woods, proportions and carefully refined construction to tell the story.

That story begins with Richard Hoover. Since founding Santa Cruz Guitar Company in 1976, Hoover has spent five decades pursuing a more thoughtful and expressive approach to the steel string acoustic guitar. His work helped lead the modern revival of small shop American lutherie, proving that the finest elements of vintage guitar making could be preserved while construction, consistency and musical responsiveness continued to evolve. Hoover’s influence reaches far beyond the instruments bearing the Santa Cruz name. His willingness to share knowledge, champion responsible wood use and treat guitar making as both a craft and a living tradition has shaped generations of builders and players.

The Vintage Southerner is a particularly soulful expression of that philosophy. Its slope shouldered body, short 24.75 inch scale and familiar pairing of Sitka spruce with Honduran mahogany evoke the great American workhorse guitars of the past, but the unmistakable refinement of Santa Cruz brings greater nuance and control to the experience. The Sitka spruce top is supported by double tapered Sitka spruce braces joined with Titebond, creating a voice that is quick, open and exceptionally responsive. Honduran mahogany back and sides add a dry, woody fundamental, warm midrange presence and crisp note separation. There is plenty of power for driving rhythm, yet the guitar retains the sensitivity and harmonic detail needed for lighter flatpicking, blues, folk and fingerstyle playing. Its short scale softens the string tension just enough to make bends, vibrato and expressive chord work feel wonderfully natural.

Visually, the Vintage Southerner carries a beautifully restrained vintage authority. A teardrop top sunburst brings warmth and depth to the Sitka spruce, while the tobacco stained mahogany back and sides lend the guitar the appearance of an instrument that has already lived a long musical life. Ivoroid body binding is framed by black, maple and black top purfling, with an ivoroid rosette, black backstrip and matching tailstrip completing the understated presentation. The VS shape tortoise pickguard adds the perfect period inspired accent.

An ebony rectangular bridge and matching fingerboard provide an elegant foundation, while black fingerboard binding gives the neck a particularly clean silhouette. Mother of pearl Doppler Dot inlays introduce a subtle signature detail without disturbing the guitar’s traditional character. The ebony headstock veneer is finished with the ivoroid Santa Cruz script logo and fitted with nickel Waverly tuning machines with ivoroid buttons. Ebony bridge pins with mother of pearl dots complete the appointments.

The Honduran mahogany neck features a comfortable round profile, a 1 11/16 inch nut width and 2 3/16 inch bridge spacing. Standard fret wire and a traditional 4 inch soundhole further preserve the direct, familiar feel of the Vintage Southerner design. At just 3 pounds 13 ounces, the guitar feels light, alive and eager to respond, with the effortless vibration one expects from a carefully voiced Santa Cruz.

The Founder Collection Vintage Southerner is more than an anniversary edition. It is a distillation of fifty years of experience, conviction and musical curiosity. Warm, immediate and deeply expressive, it honors the vintage guitars that inspired Richard Hoover while embodying the standards he helped establish for the modern acoustic guitar.
