The 2024 Santa Cruz 000 Custom is a breathtaking convergence of history, rarity and masterful American guitar making. Built with a master grade Fort Ross Chapel redwood top and quilted mahogany from the legendary Tree, it brings together two extraordinary tonewoods whose stories are nearly as captivating as the instrument itself. Elegant, intimate and remarkably alive, this custom 000 embodies the sensitivity of a small bodied guitar while possessing a depth, authority and harmonic richness that extend far beyond its graceful dimensions.

For half a century, Santa Cruz Guitar Company founder Richard Hoover has stood among the most respected and influential figures in modern acoustic guitar making. His fifty years behind the bench have been defined by an unwavering devotion to traditional methods, thoughtful innovation and the belief that every piece of wood should be understood before it is shaped. Under Richard’s guidance, Santa Cruz has elevated individual voicing into an art form, creating instruments that are built around the unique properties of their materials rather than forced into a predetermined formula. This remarkable 000 Custom is a beautiful expression of that philosophy, combining exceptionally rare woods with meticulous construction and an unmistakable sense of purpose.

The master grade Fort Ross Chapel redwood top is a material of extraordinary scarcity and historical significance. Salvaged from timbers associated with the historic Fort Ross Chapel on the Northern California coast, this old growth redwood possesses the lightness, stiffness and deeply seasoned character that can only develop across an immense span of time. Its voice combines the warmth and immediacy associated with the finest redwood with exceptional clarity, responsiveness and harmonic complexity. Even under the lightest touch, the top awakens with color and nuance, while retaining the strength and composure needed to respond beautifully as the player leans into the strings.

The back and sides were fashioned from quilted mahogany taken from the fabled Tree, one of the most celebrated and elusive tonewood discoveries in the history of modern guitar making. Harvested from an enormous mahogany tree deep within the Honduran rainforest, this material is prized for its dramatic figure, extreme rarity and extraordinary musical potential. The three dimensional quilting appears to move beneath the finish, creating a visual depth that is almost impossible to capture in photographs. Sonically, The Tree can transcend conventional expectations of mahogany, offering its familiar warmth, focus and woody fundamental alongside remarkable sustain, expansive overtones and a rich, almost rosewood like dimensionality.

Beneath the Fort Ross redwood top, advanced X scalloped Adirondack spruce bracing provides strength, elasticity and dynamic freedom. Hot hide glue construction creates an exceptionally direct and efficient bond throughout the instrument, allowing its carefully selected woods to work together as a unified acoustic system. The result is a voice that feels immediate and effortless, with a quick response, generous sustain and an intoxicating bloom surrounding every note. Its 000 body offers exceptional balance and intimacy, yet the combination of ancient redwood and The Tree mahogany gives it a sense of scale and grandeur rarely encountered in a guitar of this size.

Highly figured maple appoints nearly every edge and transition, including the body, fingerboard and headstock bindings, rosette, backstrip, heel cap and tail wedge. These luminous details provide an elegant visual counterpoint to the dark, richly figured mahogany and the warm complexion of the redwood top. Traditional herringbone top purfling lends a subtle vintage character, while the slotted ziricote headstock veneer, ziricote fingerboard and ziricote bridge add dramatic color, fine texture and understated sophistication. Delicate 2mm mother of pearl fingerboard dots complete the design without distracting from the spectacular natural beauty of the woods.

A Honduran mahogany neck, 25.375 inch scale length, 1 3/4 inch nut width and 2 1/4 inch bridge spacing create a wonderfully familiar and versatile playing experience. Gold Waverly three on a plate tuning machines with snakewood buttons provide the perfect finishing touch, combining precise operation with an appropriately luxurious appearance.

Although lightly used, this guitar remains in flawless, like new condition. It was recently returned to Santa Cruz Guitar Company for a complete evaluation and refresh before being offered for sale. In July of 2026, it received a clean bill of health from the very craftspeople responsible for its creation, confirming that it is ready to begin its next chapter exactly as it should. The guitar weighs an exceptionally comfortable 3 pounds, 11 ounces and includes its Ameritage hard case.

The 2024 Santa Cruz 000 Custom is far more than a collection of rare specifications. It is a singular instrument built from materials that may never be available in this combination again, guided by Richard Hoover’s lifetime of knowledge and brought to life by one of the finest acoustic guitar workshops in the world. Visually astonishing, historically compelling and musically profound, it offers its next owner the rare opportunity to experience Fort Ross Chapel redwood and The Tree mahogany speaking together in one extraordinary voice.
