The Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Mahogany Explorer Reissue VOS in Antique Natural is a masterful revival of one of the most daring and revolutionary electric guitars ever conceived. With its angular body lines, futuristic attitude, and unmistakable presence, this historic reissue captures the spirit of the original 1958 Explorer while elevating it with meticulous craftsmanship and vintage-correct detailing. Its Nitrocellulose VOS (Vintage Patina) finish enhances the guitar’s natural mahogany grain with a softly aged glow, giving the instrument the look and feel of a cherished late-’50s original without crossing into full relic territory. The 2-piece solid mahogany body and matching mahogany neck bring warmth, resonance, and authoritative sustain—exactly what early Explorer devotees expect.

A comfortable 50s Vintage neck profile anchors the playing experience, shaped to feel substantial yet inviting, with a period-accurate 628.65mm / 24.75" scale length. The hide-glue construction and Authentic 1950s no-tube truss rod ensure true vintage build integrity. Topped with a smooth Indian rosewood fingerboard, the guitar offers a classic 12" radius and 22 Authentic Medium Jumbo frets—ideal for expressive bends and articulate phrasing. Cellulose dot inlays reinforce the minimalist, vintage-correct aesthetic, while a nylon nut (42.8mm / 1.69") contributes to the Explorer’s familiar feel and tonal response.

Electronics are where this reissue especially shines. Equipped with a matched pair of unpotted Custombucker Alnico 3 pickups, the guitar delivers the airy bloom, woody midrange, and dynamic sensitivity associated with the best late-’50s PAFs. The wiring harness is equally faithful: 500K CTS Vintage Taper potentiometers and a phone-book capacitor provide a wide expressive sweep, allowing players to dial in everything from crystalline cleans to snarling rock tones with ease. A Switchcraft 3-way selector and 1/4" output jack ensure rock-solid reliability.

Every hardware detail is obsessively vintage-accurate. The ABR-1 no-wire bridge and lightweight aluminum stop bar tailpiece work together for exceptional resonance, while the True Historic aged gold pickup covers, aged gold tuner plating, and Kluson Single Ring Reissue tuning machines match the look and performance of the originals. True Historic black mounting rings, black top hat knobs with dial pointers, a 4-ply white pickguard, brown Explorer control covers, and a True Historic amber switch tip complete the aesthetic with period-perfect authenticity. The headstock features the classic 1958 shape adorned with a genuine Mother of Pearl Gibson logo. The guitar arrives strung with .010–.046 gauges and is housed in a Historic Explorer Brown/Pink hardshell case for maximum protection and presentation.

The Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Mahogany Explorer Reissue VOS Antique Natural is more than a reissue—it’s a time capsule, a work of art, and a powerful instrument built to inspire. Its flawless craftsmanship, vintage tone, and unmistakable silhouette make it a standout for collectors and players who demand the essence of Gibson’s most iconic and forward-thinking designs.
