The 2022 Gaiero OMC-12 in Sinker Redwood and Black Locust is a striking example of Mark Gaiero’s thoughtful, deeply musical approach to the modern handmade acoustic guitar. Gaiero came to lutherie with years of fine woodworking experience before undertaking the kind of apprenticeship that few builders ever have access to, studying under Ervin Somogyi, one of the most influential voices in contemporary steel string guitar design. That background can be felt throughout this instrument. It is not simply ornate or finely made. It feels considered, responsive, and built around the living conversation between player, wood, string, and air.

The voice begins with a Sinker Redwood top, a tonewood loved for its quick response, warm overtone bloom, and beautifully relaxed dynamic character. Paired with Black Locust back and sides, this OMC-12 offers a compelling blend of richness, clarity, and immediacy. Black Locust brings a strong, articulate fundamental with a woody, reflective quality, while the redwood top adds color, softness, and a sense of effortless response under the right hand. The result is a guitar that feels wonderfully alive, especially for fingerstyle players, nuanced flatpickers, and anyone who wants an instrument that reveals more the more delicately it is played.

This guitar is used, but remains in beautiful condition and is in overall excellent shape. There are light pick scuffs on the top finish, consistent with careful enjoyment, but nothing that distracts from the elegance, playability, or presence of the instrument. At 4 lb 15 oz, it has a substantial, reassuring feel while retaining the responsiveness and sensitivity expected from a world class handmade OMC.

Complete with its custom Calton flight case, this 2022 Gaiero OMC-12 is a rare and inspiring instrument from a builder whose work reflects both disciplined training and a clear individual voice.
