The Kevin Kopp OM 20th Anniversary Tunnel Redwood and Moon Burst Maple is an instrument created in a moment of reflection, celebration, and renewed purpose. Kevin’s path through the world of lutherie has been shaped by years spent studying the spirits of great guitars, first in the legendary Gibson restoration shop where he learned the language of tone through the hands of history. He became a steward of instruments that had already lived rich musical lives, learning from their stories and the choices that shaped them. When he stepped forward to build under his own name, he brought with him not only skill but a philosophy rooted in honesty, tradition, and the belief that a guitar should feel alive from the first moment one touches a string. Two decades later, the Kopp name has become a quiet force in the craft, known for instruments that radiate warmth, depth, and the unmistakable signature of a builder who listens closely to the wood.
To honor this twentieth anniversary, Kevin chose materials that echo both rarity and reverence. The top is Tunnel Redwood, reclaimed from timbers seasoned in deep silence and filtered light. It carries a voice that is unusually open, darkly sweet, and effortlessly expressive, as though the decades within the wood have already taught it how to sing. Beneath this glowing soundboard lies an OM body shaped from figured maple finished in a soft moonburst. The maple curls and swirls with pale flame, giving the guitar a luminous quality that seems to shimmer from every angle. Together the redwood and maple create a unique marriage of warmth and clarity, old soul and modern breath.
A Honduran mahogany neck rises from this shimmering form, its comfortable profile leading the hand to a Honduran rosewood fingerboard and bridge that add richness and sustain to every note. An ebony headstock veneer offers a dark canvas for the mother of pearl logo that marks this anniversary creation. The fingerboard is adorned with mother of pearl dot inlays, each one a quiet point of light along the path toward the soundhole where a multi layer ivoroid rosette wraps the Tunnel Redwood in gentle contrast. Ivoroid binding continues around the body, bringing a soft glow to the edges, while a tortoise pickguard rests against the top like a warm ember.
Nickel Waverly tuning machines with oval buttons provide a graceful finishing touch, turning with the smooth assurance of fine mechanical craft. A bone nut, saddle, and pins offer clean transfer of vibration, allowing the voice of the redwood and maple to rise without hindrance. The instrument is built with a twenty five and one half inch scale, a one and three quarter inch nut, and two and five sixteenths spacing at the bridge, inviting a balance of power, comfort, and expression. At four pounds four ounces, it feels light in the hands yet full of presence, a fitting embodiment of two decades of dedication.
Protected in its TKL hardshell case, this twentieth anniversary OM stands as both a celebration of where Kevin has been and a promise of where he will go. It carries within it the story of a builder who has spent his life shaping sound into something timeless, and it is ready to sing new stories for generations to come.
