The Iris MS-00 12 Fret Distressed is shaped by a partnership rooted in deep respect for early American guitar design. When Iris founder Adam Buchwald set out to create a small-bodied model that captured the dry bark, quick response and intimate feel of classic Depression-era instruments, he teamed up with renowned vintage Gibson expert Mark Stutman. Stutman’s lifetime of studying pre-war Gibson 12-fret guitars brought invaluable insight into the proportions, top geometry, internal architecture, and overall build style that gave those instruments their unmistakable voice.
Working closely, Buchwald and Stutman refined the body silhouette, the 12-fret neck-to-body relationship, the bracing layout, and the lightweight build philosophy that drives the MS series. The result is a guitar that doesn’t just nod to vintage tradition — it feels and behaves like something pulled from a well-loved case in a shop up in the hills. Their collaboration ensures the MS-00 has the woody immediacy, punchy midrange, and easy responsiveness that players associate with those early instruments, all while benefiting from modern consistency and playability.
This particular MS-00 12 Fret Distressed carries that spirit forward with an all-mahogany construction that offers warmth, clarity and focus. The scalloped Adirondack spruce bracing adds breadth and liveliness, giving the guitar a surprising openness for a hardwood-top build. The mahogany neck, carved into a comfortable C shape, pairs with an Indian rosewood fretboard shaped to a 16 inch radius with clean blind fret slots. An Indian rosewood bar bridge, bone nut and saddle, and off white pins round out the tonal core.
Visually, the guitar wears ivoroid binding, B/W/B purfling and rosette, and Golden Age relic brass tuners that feel right at home on a design rooted in the 1930s. The distressed gloss nitro top and open pore satin nitro back and sides give it a naturally worn look and an easy, tactile feel. With a 24 3/4 inch scale, 1 3/4 inch nut and 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing, the guitar offers plenty of room for nuanced fingerstyle while remaining quick and lively for strumming. At only 3 pounds 8 ounces, it feels featherlight and resonant in the hands.
Housed in a hard shell case and built with the thoughtful simplicity that defines Iris, the MS-00 12 Fret Distressed stands as the direct product of Buchwald and Stutman’s shared passion for vintage-inspired instruments. It is an honest, soulful guitar made for players who value tone, character and a design rooted in history.
