The Huss and Dalton T-OO14 Custom “The Virginian” is more than a guitar. It is a statement of place, pride, and craftsmanship rooted deeply in Virginia soil.
When CEO and Master Luthier Brian Dickel challenged his small team to design their own signature instruments, the goal was simple but demanding. Build something personal. Build something meaningful. Build something that reflects who you are as a craftsman. The result is the Crafters Select Series, and “The Virginian” stands as one of its most compelling voices.
Designed by Dean Jones, a cornerstone of the Huss and Dalton workshop for over 20 years, this instrument reflects decades of hands-on experience and quiet refinement. Dean did not reach outward for exotic inspiration. He looked homeward. Every primary wood on this guitar is native to Virginia, the home state of Huss and Dalton Guitars. That decision alone makes this instrument special. It is a regional tribute shaped by expert hands.
At its heart is a Red Spruce top, powerful, responsive, and unmistakably American. Paired with Adirondack Spruce bracing, it delivers headroom, clarity, and dynamic range that rewards both a delicate touch and a confident attack. The voice is articulate and direct, with the kind of projection that makes a small body feel expansive.
The Black Walnut back and sides provide warmth and focus, sitting beautifully between the dryness of mahogany and the complexity of rosewood. It is a wood with character, visually rich and tonally balanced. The Black Walnut neck adds visual continuity and structural integrity, while the Curly Walnut bindings frame the body and fingerboard with subtle elegance.
Dean’s attention to detail shines in the custom Walnut and Maple rope top purfling and matching backstrip. It is tasteful, deliberate, and unmistakably handcrafted. The Black Walnut rosette and Curly Walnut headstock veneer continue the theme, creating a cohesive aesthetic that feels grounded and authentic rather than ornamental for ornament’s sake.
The use of Persimmon for the fingerboard and belly bridge is a bold and thoughtful choice. Native to Virginia and historically prized for its density and durability, persimmon brings clarity and snap to the attack while visually distinguishing this instrument from the ordinary. Mother of Pearl dot inlays keep the look clean and classic.
Nickel Gotoh open gear tuning machines complement the understated elegance, while the comfortable 24.9 inch scale length, 1 3/4 inch nut width, and 2 7/32 inch bridge spacing offer a familiar, player-focused feel. At just 3 pounds 9 ounces, this guitar is remarkably light and alive in the hands. You feel the top move. You feel the resonance against your body. That responsiveness translates directly into musical nuance.
“The Virginian” is not flashy. It does not need to be. It represents a master builder empowering his team, a veteran craftsman distilling two decades of experience into a personal design, and a company honoring the land it calls home.
This is what happens when craftsmanship, geography, and identity align. It is a guitar built with intention, built with pride, and built to be played.
