The Collings D1A-T is a stunning embodiment of the timeless dreadnought ideal, reimagined through the lens of Collings’ Traditional Series craftsmanship. At its heart lies a top of Adirondack spruce, revered for its strength, clarity, and responsiveness. Paired with perfectly quartered Honduran mahogany for the back, sides, and neck, this instrument delivers the crisp power and dynamic warmth that define the golden era of acoustic tone. Every note emerges with an effortless authority, framed by a subtle sweetness that makes both flatpicking and fingerstyle playing a joy.
The D1A-T bears all the hallmarks of Collings’ Traditional voicing philosophy, where every element is shaped by hand to produce a lighter, more supple response reminiscent of the great pre-war guitars. The Adirondack top is supported by a custom Traditional Series pre-war scalloped X-brace made of Sitka spruce, carefully shaped to maximize resonance and projection. There is no tongue brace, allowing the top to breathe with remarkable openness and sustain. The body is finished in an ultra-thin, high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer with aging toner, giving the guitar both a vintage glow and an immediate sense of comfort, as though it has already lived a lifetime of music.
Visually, the D1A-T is understated elegance at its finest. The tortoise body binding with custom wood purflings, the wood rosette, and the 1-style walnut backstrip lend a natural sophistication that speaks to Collings’ dedication to detail. The square peghead is crowned with an ebony veneer and a gold mother-of-pearl Collings logo, a quiet mark of distinction. The ebony fingerboard features long gold mother-of-pearl dots, set against the dark, glassy surface with perfect precision. Nickel Waverly tuners, aged for a soft patina, add both function and vintage charm.
Every detail of the D1A-T has been considered for playability and feel. The Traditional neck profile, measuring .815" at the first fret and 1.018" at the ninth, provides a comfortable yet substantial grip. A compound fingerboard radius from 14" to 26" ensures effortless playability across the neck, while the 1 3/4" bone nut and 2 5/16" bridge spacing create an ideal setup for both flatpicking and fingerstyle players. The ebony belly-style bridge, bone cutthrough saddle, and tortoise-style bridge pins complete the elegant aesthetic while maximizing tonal transfer and sustain.
Weighing just 4 lbs 3 oz, this D1A-T feels alive in the hands, resonant even before the first note is played. Every vibration, every chord, every harmonic blooms with depth and complexity, revealing the artistry of Collings’ builders and the enduring vision of Bill Collings himself. Delivered in a deluxe hardshell case and strung with D’Addario EJ-17s, the Collings D1A-T is more than a guitar—it is a living instrument, crafted to inspire for generations.
