Warwick Electric Basses — The Sound of Modern Europe

Hans-Peter Wilfer founded Warwick in 1982 in Erlangen, Germany, the son of Fred Wilfer who had founded the legendary Framus guitar brand a generation earlier. He had a clear vision: build basses that combined the exotic African tonewoods he had become obsessed with alongside German precision manufacturing, producing instruments that spoke a fundamentally different tonal language from anything Fender, Gibson, or Rickenbacker had ever produced. Three years later, Jack Bruce, the bassist who had defined rock bass playing with Cream, discovered the Thumb Bass. His endorsement did not simply sell guitars. It proved that a small German workshop could compete with the American giants on the world stage, and Warwick has never looked back.

Today, building from Markneukirchen in the Saxon Vogtland, a town with centuries of instrument-making tradition, Warwick produces instruments across three tiers that collectively represent the most comprehensive bass lineup built in Europe. Robert Trujillo of Metallica, Adam Clayton of U2, Bootsy Collins, Jonas Hellborg, Stuart Zender of Jamiroquai, and P-Nut of 311 have all made Warwick basses their primary instruments. The players who find Warwick tend to stay, drawn by a tonal character that sits entirely apart from the American alternatives and rewards serious playing with a depth and complexity that passive conventional basses cannot match.

The Warwick Voice

The Warwick tonal signature begins with the tonewoods. Bubinga, wenge, ovangkol, and swamp ash are the primary body and neck woods across the German-made lineup, each one chosen for specific acoustic properties that no domestic American wood combination can replicate. Wenge necks, in particular, produce a dense, tight, percussive attack that maple cannot approach, with a midrange presence that cuts through any mix without requiring EQ intervention. The proprietary MEC active electronics system, designed specifically for Warwick instruments by their in-house electronics team, delivers a warm yet punchy signal with tonal shaping capabilities that cover everything from deep vintage warmth to aggressive modern grind. Every German-made Warwick features a just-a-nut brass nut, a zero fret, and a bell brass bridge, three components that contribute directly to the instrument's sustain, intonation stability, and tonal clarity.

The Collections

Custom Shop — The absolute pinnacle of the Warwick operation, built entirely by hand in Markneukirchen to the player's exact specification with the most exotic tonewoods in the building, the most sophisticated electronics configurations available, and the full range of finish and inlay options that the Custom Shop program offers. Every Custom Shop instrument is a unique collaboration between the player and the Warwick master builders, built to a standard that represents the finest German bass making available anywhere.

German Pro Series — Factory-built in Markneukirchen under the supervision of the Warwick master builders, the Pro Series instruments deliver the full Warwick exotic tonewood and MEC electronics experience in a production format that makes the genuine German Warwick experience accessible to a wider range of players. The sweet spot in the lineup for serious working bassists who want everything that defines the Warwick sound without the Custom Shop lead time and investment.

RockBass Series — Designed in Germany and built in Asia to Warwick's full specification, the revamped 2024 RockBass lineup features advanced fretwork, enhanced craftsmanship, improved pickup mounting, and refined body contours that bring these instruments closer to the German-made models than at any point in the series' history. Available in four, five, and six-string configurations with short and medium scale options, fretless variants, and a wide range of finishes.

The Models

Thumb — The instrument that put Warwick on the map and the one most closely associated with the brand's identity. A compact, asymmetrical body with neck-through construction, 26 frets, and the aggressive, punchy, midrange-forward voice that Jack Bruce, Jonas Hellborg, and Robert Trujillo built their Warwick relationships around. Available in neck-through and bolt-on configurations across the German Pro and Custom Shop tiers, and in RockBass configuration for players entering the Warwick world for the first time.

Corvette — The most versatile and widely played model in the Warwick lineup, a double-cutaway design available in Standard, $$ (double humbucker), and Proline configurations covering the full spectrum of Warwick tonal character from warm and round to bright and aggressive. The most accessible entry point into the German Pro Series and the model most widely recommended for players making the transition from conventional Fender-style basses into the Warwick universe.

Streamer — Inspired by the original Spector NS body shape that Stuart Spector licensed to Warwick in the mid-1980s, the Streamer brings an elegantly curved, ergonomically refined body to the Warwick platform. Available in Stage I neck-through and Stage II bolt-on configurations, the Streamer is the preferred Warwick model for fingerstyle players and those who want maximum tonal versatility across a wider range of musical contexts. Stuart Zender's Jamiroquai playing and P-Nut's 311 work have both been built around Streamer models.

Dolphin — The most visually distinctive and tonally refined model in the Warwick lineup, with an unusual asymmetrical single-cutaway body shape and neck-through construction that produces extraordinary sustain and tonal complexity. A collector's instrument and a player's instrument in equal measure, the Dolphin is the choice of bassists who want everything the Warwick name can deliver in its most focused and refined expression.

Star Bass — Warwick's most elegant departure from their modern aesthetic, a semi-hollow instrument that delivers a warm, resonant, acoustically rich voice unlike anything else in the lineup. The semi-hollow body allows the sound to breathe and bloom in a way that solid-body basses cannot replicate, making the Star Bass the preferred Warwick for jazz, blues, and players who want the Warwick quality and German craftsmanship in a fundamentally different tonal character.

Signature Models

The Warwick signature program is one of the most extensive in the bass world, with instruments developed alongside Robert Trujillo of Metallica, Bootsy Collins, Adam Clayton of U2, Jack Bruce, T.M. Stevens, and P-Nut of 311 across both the German-made and RockBass Artist lines. Each signature instrument reflects the specific tonal and aesthetic requirements of the player who helped develop it, and the roster collectively represents some of the most influential bass playing in the history of popular music.
