Hans-Peter Wilfer founded Warwick in 1982 in Erlangen, Germany, the son of Fred Wilfer who had founded the legendary Framus guitar brand a generation earlier. He had a clear vision: build basses that combined the exotic African tonewoods he had become obsessed with alongside German precision manufacturing, producing instruments that spoke a fundamentally different tonal language from anything Fender, Gibson, or Rickenbacker had ever produced. Three years later, Jack Bruce, the bassist who had defined rock bass playing with Cream, discovered the Thumb Bass. His endorsement did not simply sell guitars. Today, building from Markneukirchen in the Saxon Vogtland, a town with centuries of instrument-making tradition, Warwick produces instruments across three tiers that collectively represent the most comprehensive bass lineup built in Europe. RockBass Series — Designed in Germany and built in Asia to Warwick's full specification, the revamped 2024 RockBass lineup features advanced fretwork, enhanced craftsmanship, improved pickup mounting, and refined body contours that bring these instruments closer to the German-made models than at any point in the series' history. Available in four, five, and six-string configurations with short and medium scale options, fretless variants, and a wide range of finishes.
The Models
Thumb — The instrument that put Warwick on the map and the one most closely associated with the brand's identity. Corvette — The most versatile and widely played model in the Warwick lineup, a double-cutaway design available in Standard, $$ (double humbucker), and Proline configurations covering the full spectrum of Warwick tonal character from warm and round to bright and aggressive. The most accessible entry point into the German Pro Series and the model most widely recommended for players making the transition from conventional Fender-style basses into the Warwick universe.
Streamer — Inspired by the original Spector NS body shape that Stuart Spector licensed to Warwick in the mid-1980s, the Streamer brings an elegantly curved, ergonomically refined body to the Warwick platform. Available in Stage I neck-through and Stage II bolt-on configurations, the Streamer is the preferred Warwick model for fingerstyle players and those who want maximum tonal versatility across a wider range of musical contexts. Stuart Zender's Jamiroquai playing and P-Nut's 311 work have both been built around Streamer models.
Dolphin — The most visually distinctive and tonally refined model in the Warwick lineup, with an unusual asymmetrical single-cutaway body shape and neck-through construction that produces extraordinary sustain and tonal complexity.
