The Huss & Dalton OO Custom in Sitka Spruce and Osage Orange is a guitar that quietly commands attention. Elegant, rare, and deeply musical, it represents the thoughtful craftsmanship and artistic freedom found in the Crafters Select Series from Huss & Dalton. This special collection is unlike a typical production line. Each instrument in the series is conceived and designed by a veteran member of the Huss & Dalton team, allowing decades of experience and personal vision to shape every detail of the guitar.
This particular OO was designed by Huss & Dalton Production Manager Phil King, whose years at the bench have given him an intimate understanding of what players truly value in a guitar. His design blends classic aesthetics with uncommon tonewoods, resulting in an instrument that feels both timeless and distinctive.
At its heart is a beautifully voiced Sitka spruce top finished in a rich custom sunburst. The burst brings depth and warmth to the visual presentation while highlighting the natural grain of the spruce. Sitka remains one of the most versatile tonewoods available, prized for its dynamic headroom, clarity, and balanced response. Whether played with a light fingerstyle touch or a more assertive attack, the top responds with remarkable articulation and musicality.
The back and sides are crafted from Osage Orange, a fascinating and rarely seen tonewood in high-end acoustic guitar building. Native to North America and known for its incredible density and resilience, Osage Orange delivers a tonal character that sits beautifully between maple and rosewood. The result is a voice that is focused and clear, with impressive projection, strong note separation, and a shimmering overtone structure that adds complexity without sacrificing definition.
Visually, the guitar is stunning. Sunset tortoise appointments unify the design, appearing in the body binding, fingerboard binding, headstock binding, rosette, and pickguard. These warm amber tones complement the sunburst top and the golden hues of the Osage Orange beautifully, giving the instrument a cohesive and refined aesthetic.
A figured ebony headstock veneer crowns the guitar, while the ebony fingerboard and pyramid bridge provide both visual contrast and tonal precision. Slotted squares fingerboard inlays add a tasteful vintage-inspired detail that feels perfectly at home on this refined OO body.
The compact OO body shape, measuring 14 1/8 inches in width with a 19 3/8 inch body length and 4 1/8 inch depth, offers exceptional comfort while delivering a voice that is focused and responsive. Combined with the 24.9 inch scale length, 1 3/4 inch nut width, and 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing, the instrument feels immediately inviting to fingerstyle players while remaining versatile enough for a wide range of styles.
High ratio nickel Waverly tuning machines provide precise and reliable tuning stability, a fitting complement to an instrument built with this level of care. Despite its robust tonal presence, the guitar weighs just 4 pounds 1 ounce, giving it an effortless resonance and lively response in the hands.
Completing the package is a classic Huss & Dalton tweed case, offering both protection and vintage-inspired style worthy of the instrument within.
The Huss & Dalton OO Custom designed by Phil King is more than just a beautifully crafted guitar. It is a personal expression from one of the craftsmen behind the brand, built with the insight that only years of experience can provide. Rare woods, thoughtful design, and impeccable execution come together in a guitar that feels as inspiring to play as it is to behold.
