For more than five decades, Michael Millard has quietly built some of the most refined steel string instruments in the world. Over 50 years at the bench has shaped not just his technique, but his philosophy. No shortcuts. No outsourcing of the soul. Just a small, dedicated team of luthiers working in tight collaboration, building a handful of instruments each year to uncompromising standards. Every Froggy Bottom that leaves the shop carries that focus, and this Model C Deluxe stands as a clear expression of it.
The foundation begins with a powerful Adirondack Spruce top, chosen for its headroom, clarity, and explosive dynamic range. It is paired with breathtaking 5A Quilted Sapele back and sides, alive with depth and movement. Sapele brings a strong, articulate midrange with piano like lows and shimmering highs, while the quilting adds a visual drama that feels almost three dimensional under the clear high gloss finish. At just 3 pounds 13 ounces, this 12 fret Model C responds instantly, with a warmth and bloom that only deepens as you dig in.
Curly Maple body binding frames the instrument with crisp elegance, while an abalone rosette and matching backstrip add refined color without excess. The details are deliberate, not ornamental for ornament’s sake.
One of the most extraordinary touches is the Petria Mitchell ancient fossil mammoth ivory scrimshaw heelcap, featuring a hummingbird poised on a flower. It is a piece of functional art, quietly tucked where only the observant will find it, reinforcing the sense that this instrument was created, not assembled.
The slotted headstock is faced with 4A rosewood veneer and bound for a finished, architectural look. The abalone frog logo gleams at the crown, unmistakable yet tasteful. Nickel Waverly tuning machines with a 21:1 high ratio provide smooth, precise control that players at this level demand.
The ebony fingerboard carries a comfortable 20 inch radius and the #3 Pattern Fleur de Lis inlay, elegant and timeless. A 1 3/4 inch nut width and 2 5/16 inch bridge spacing give the right hand room to breathe, while the 24 3/4 inch scale length enhances warmth and responsiveness. The 1 1/8 inch pyramid bridge in ebony, paired with paua dot bridge and end pins, anchors the top with vintage inspired grace. An imitation tortoise pickguard completes the classic aesthetic.
This is a 12 fret guitar, and that matters. The neck joint shifts the bridge placement into the heart of the lower bout, increasing warmth, sustain, and harmonic complexity. The result is a voice that feels intimate yet powerful, balanced yet rich, articulate yet forgiving.
It arrives in a TKL American Vintage case, but make no mistake. This is not an instrument built to sit in its case. It is built to be played, recorded, and passed down.
Michael Millard and his small team do not rush. They build heirlooms. And this Model C Deluxe is exactly that.
