The Collings D1 Mh takes a straightforward concept and executes it at the highest level. An all Honduran mahogany body paired with Collings’ exacting build standards results in a dreadnought that is dry, punchy, and unapologetically honest.
With a Honduran mahogany top, back, and sides, this D1 Mh delivers a strong fundamental, warm low end, and a focused midrange that cuts cleanly through a mix. There is a natural compression to the attack that makes it incredibly satisfying under a heavy right hand, while still remaining articulate and balanced for lighter touch playing. Sitka spruce pre war scalloped bracing adds lift and headroom, giving the guitar clarity and projection without sacrificing the woody character that defines great mahogany instruments.
The 25 1/2 inch scale length provides snap and authority, while the 1 3/4 inch nut width and 2 1/4 inch bridge spacing offer comfortable room for both flatpickers and fingerstyle players. The modified V neck profile has just enough substance to feel supportive without getting in the way, and the 14 to 26 inch compound radius keeps chording comfortable down low while allowing for smooth lead work higher up the neck. Medium 18 percent nickel silver fretwire, a fully adjustable truss rod, and Collings’ meticulous fretwork ensure effortless playability and long term stability. The mortise and tenon hybrid neck joint maximizes strength and tonal transfer.
Visually, the D1 Mh is understated but refined. Tortoise body binding frames the rich mahogany under a high gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish. An abalone rosette adds a tasteful touch of color against the warm brown top, while black and white wood purfling and a 1 style walnut backstrip nod to classic American dreadnought tradition. The solid headstock with volute and 15 degree angle is capped with an ebony overlay and inlaid Collings logo. Ebony carries through to the fingerboard and belly style bridge, accented by mother of pearl dot inlays and ebony bridge pins. Nickel Waverly tuners with a 16:1 ratio provide smooth, reliable tuning precision.
At just 4 pounds 10 ounces, this guitar feels lively and responsive in your hands. Strung with the recommended D’Addario EJ 17 set, it offers a powerful, balanced voice that rewards confident playing and expressive dynamics.
If you are after a dreadnought that prioritizes tone, clarity, and craftsmanship over flash, the D1 Mh stands tall. It is a workhorse with refinement. Straightforward materials, world class execution, and a voice that speaks with conviction.
