The Stephen Strahm OOc stands with the confidence of a guitar built by a luthier who has mastered both precision and imagination. Stephen Strahm’s work is known for its intention. Every line, every brace, every material is chosen with a deep understanding of how an instrument should feel in the hands and how it should project its voice into the world. Years of building have shaped a maker who can translate rare materials into power, clarity, and a sound that grows broader and more expressive the harder you lean into it.
The top is German spruce that has been air dried for more than twenty five years, a soundboard with maturity already built into its fibers. It responds with immediacy, carrying both sparkle and depth. Old growth Cambodian rosewood forms the back and sides, one of the most coveted rosewoods on earth and almost never seen today in sets of this quality. Its tone is bold, focused, and richly colored, adding weight to the bass and a strong, harmonically complex edge to every note. Italian spruce braces, aged for two decades and originally intended for violin tops, give the guitar a quick, lively pulse. Together these woods create an instrument that speaks with full authority, capable of subtle nuance but eager to rise when pushed.
Inside, the Traugott style floating back brace helps the body breathe with freedom, adding projection and dimension. The aesthetic details show the same level of intention. Cambodian rosewood appears again in the headstock veneer and rosette, tying the instrument together visually and tonally. West African ebony binding with maple purfling frames the body with clean, confident lines, and the ebony fingerboard and bridge offer both strength and elegance. The Honduran mahogany neck fits comfortably in the hand, shaped for effortless movement across the entire scale. Gold mother of pearl side dots add a flash of refinement.
The hardware continues this sense of purpose. Gotoh 510 tuning machines in cosmo black turn smoothly and hold pitch with certainty, while black granite buttons add a striking visual contrast. An unbleached bone nut and a one eighth inch compensated saddle give the guitar its intonation stability and crisp articulation. Jescar medium nickel silver frets complete the playing surface with accuracy and longevity. A thin nitrocellulose finish allows the aged woods to resonate freely, giving the guitar a voice that is open, strong, and dynamic.
With a 24.875 inch scale length, a 1 and three quarter inch nut, and 2 and one quarter inch bridge spacing, the OOc is built for clarity and control. At only four pounds three ounces, it feels light and responsive, ready to leap into sound with the smallest gesture. It arrives housed in a custom Calton flight case, an appropriate protector for a guitar crafted from materials few builders will ever have the chance to work with again.
The result is an instrument that stands proudly in Strahm’s lineage. It is powerful, articulate, and unmistakably refined, shaped by a maker who knows how to bring rare woods and thoughtful design into a single, commanding voice.
