The Blind Guitars B-XXX Sunburst is a deeply poetic instrument, one that feels shaped as much by time and experience as by chisels and planes. Built by Virgile Pilon in France, this guitar reflects a luthier whose voice has been formed through years of quiet dedication, study of historic instruments, and an unwavering respect for traditional European and American guitar making. Pilon’s work carries the influence of classic prewar acoustics, filtered through a distinctly French sensitivity for balance, refinement, and restraint.
The Orchestra Model body shape gives the B-XXX its elegant versatility. It responds instantly to a light touch, yet offers surprising depth and authority when driven harder. At its heart is a Master Grade Alpine Spruce top, chosen for its clarity, elasticity, and complex overtone structure. This is spruce that speaks quickly and blooms beautifully, delivering a focused fundamental wrapped in harmonic shimmer.
The back and sides are crafted from exceptional 1930s Madagascar Rosewood, a rare and evocative tonewood that brings piano-like low end, articulate mids, and a ringing, glassy high register. Decades of age have already settled this rosewood, giving the guitar a sense of maturity and openness that new builds strive years to achieve. The mahogany neck contributes warmth and stability, creating a seamless tonal bridge between the top and back.
Visually, the B-XXX is understated and refined. Grained ivoroid bindings with herringbone purfling frame the sunburst top with classic elegance. Brass offset dot markers provide a subtle, vintage-inspired contrast along the ebony fingerboard, while the slotted ebony headplate is crowned with a Madagascar rosewood crest, a small but meaningful signature of Pilon’s attention to detail. Matching Madagascar rosewood is used for the heel cap and end graft, tying the design together with quiet cohesion.
The ebony bridge and fingerboard offer clarity and snap, paired with a bone nut and saddle for maximum energy transfer. Medium nickel silver frets with 36 percent nickel provide a smooth, traditional feel under the fingers. Nickel open gear tuning machines reinforce the guitar’s vintage character while delivering reliable, precise tuning.
Finished in gloss nitrocellulose lacquer on the body with a matte neck, the B-XXX feels alive and resonant in the hands. The 16 inch fingerboard radius, 24 3/4 inch scale length, and 1 3/4 inch nut width create a comfortable, inviting playing experience suited to fingerstyle, light flatpicking, and expressive chord work. At just 4 lb 9 oz, it is remarkably light, enhancing its immediacy and responsiveness.
The Blind Guitars B-XXX Sunburst is not a flashy statement piece. It is something far rarer. A thoughtfully voiced, historically informed instrument that rewards nuance, invites long sessions, and reflects the quiet mastery of Virgile Pilon and his place within the rich lineage of fine French luthiery.
