The Collings 00-42 T in Baked Sitka Spruce and East Indian Rosewood is a refined nod to the golden era, built with the discipline and precision that has made Collings a benchmark in modern lutherie. This is a small-body instrument with a big voice, rooted in pre-war tradition but executed with contemporary exactness.

The baked Sitka spruce top delivers immediate responsiveness and a seasoned character right out of the case. Torrefaction enhances stiffness while reducing weight, giving the guitar a dry, open attack and a mature tonal profile that feels years broken-in. Under the hood, Traditional Series construction and voicing bring this instrument to life. It features Sitka spruce braces carved in a custom pre-war scalloped X-brace pattern with no tongue brace, allowing the top to move freely and produce a warm, articulate voice with impressive headroom for a 00. Expect focused fundamentals, shimmering overtones, and a woody midrange that thrives in fingerstyle but holds its own with a flatpick.

East Indian rosewood back and sides provide depth and harmonic richness, complementing the baked Sitka’s clarity with strong piano-like lows and glassy trebles. The result is balance and complexity across the entire register. The 24 7/8 inch scale length adds a touch of warmth and elasticity to the feel, while the 14 inch lower bout and 4 inch body depth keep the instrument comfortable and intimate without sacrificing projection.

The Honduran mahogany neck is carved to a traditional profile, measuring 0.862 inch at the first fret and 1.032 inch at the ninth. It feels substantial without being bulky, offering a confident grip for long sessions. The 1 3/4 inch nut width and 2 5/16 inch string spacing over the ebony pyramid-style bridge provide generous room for precise fingerstyle work. A 14 to 26 inch compound fingerboard radius enhances playability up the neck, and medium 18 percent nickel-silver frets offer durability and a smooth feel. The mortise and tenon hybrid neck joint and fully adjustable truss rod ensure long-term stability and serviceability.

Visually, this 00-42 T is steeped in tradition. Ivoroid bindings frame the body, fingerboard, and headstock, while 42 style abalone trim encircles the top and fingerboard extension. An abalone rosette and abalone torch headstock inlay add classic elegance without excess. The stained exotic ebony peghead veneer, three-style mosaic backstrip, and tortoise pickguard complete the vintage aesthetic. Nickel Waverly tuners with a 16:1 ratio provide smooth, accurate tuning, and bone nut and saddle enhance clarity and sustain. Ivoroid bridge pins with black dots keep the look period-correct.

Finished in a vintage satin ultra-thin nitrocellulose lacquer on both body and neck, the guitar feels alive in the hands. The thin finish allows the top to breathe and resonate freely while offering a soft, broken-in tactile experience. Weighing just 3 pounds 15 ounces, this instrument is remarkably lightweight, contributing to its quick response and dynamic sensitivity.

Strung with D'Addario EJ-16 strings and housed in a deluxe hardshell case, the Collings 00-42 T is built for players who value nuance, tradition, and uncompromising craftsmanship. It is a focused, elegant voice that rewards a refined touch and invites you to dig deeper every time you pick it up.
