The Atkin OM37 captures the soul of a golden era acoustic while delivering the reliability and refinement demanded by today’s serious players. Built by Alister Atkin and his small, intensely focused team in Canterbury, England, this Orchestra Model reflects their reputation for vintage inspired voicing, meticulous aging work, and uncompromising tonewood selection.
At the heart of the OM37 is a Baked Adirondack spruce top chosen for its explosive headroom and dry, open response. The torrefaction process accelerates the aging of the wood, producing a top that reacts instantly to the lightest touch yet stays composed under aggressive flatpicking. Paired with East Indian rosewood back and sides, the voice becomes broad and orchestral, with piano like lows, complex overtone shimmer, and a clear, singing midrange that suits fingerstyle, strumming, and articulate lead lines equally well. Pre war scalloped bracing enhances air movement and projection, giving the guitar a lively, broken in character straight out of the case.
Visually, the OM37 leans hard into classic pre war aesthetics. Herringbone purfling, grained ivoroid binding, and a black white black rosette frame the top beautifully, while the zipper style backstrip adds a distinctive vintage flourish. The age toned relic gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish gives the instrument the look and feel of a treasured heirloom, subtly softened and resonant in the hands without sacrificing elegance.
A mahogany neck with a 25.4 inch scale length and comfortable 16 inch fingerboard radius provides clarity and string separation, while the 1.77 inch nut width offers ample room for intricate fingerstyle work. Ebony fingerboard and bridge contribute to note definition and sustain, complemented by bone nut and saddle for maximum energy transfer. Nickel Gotoh tuners ensure smooth, stable tuning, and tasteful mother of pearl fret markers with white celluloid side dots complete the understated, period correct look.
Weighing in at just 4 lb 5 oz, the OM37 feels light and responsive, ready to resonate at the slightest encouragement. It ships in an Atkin black hard case, perfectly suited to protect a guitar that is destined for constant playing rather than a life on a stand.
The Atkin OM37 is for players who crave the tone and character of a well loved pre war instrument but want the consistency and craftsmanship of a modern boutique build. Warm, powerful, and endlessly expressive, it is the kind of guitar that keeps pulling you back for just one more song.
