The Gibson Custom Shop Made 2 Measure Murphy Lab ’59 Les Paul Standard, finished in the Murphy Painted Ultra Heavy Aged Lemon Burst, is a spectacular showcase of vintage authenticity, tonal excellence, and the artistry of the Murphy Lab. This guitar holds exceptional significance as one of the last Gibson instruments personally painted by Tom Murphy, who is no longer painting instruments, making it a highly collectible and historically important piece. The Lemon Burst finish captures a vibrant, sun-drenched gradient that highlights the natural flame of the hand-selected maple top, while the Ultra Heavy Aged treatment recreates decades of authentic wear, lacquer checking, and subtle patina, giving the guitar the visual character of a true vintage ’59 Les Paul.
The body construction faithfully adheres to the classic 1959 Les Paul specifications. It features a lightweight solid mahogany body paired with a handpicked two-piece figured maple top, both joined using hide-glue fit for optimal resonance and sustain. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish is thin and resonant, enhancing both the tonal response and the visual depth of the maple’s flame. The Ultra Heavy Aged process imbues the guitar with realistic wear patterns and color variation, producing the impression of decades of natural playing and aging.
The neck is crafted from solid mahogany with a long neck tenon, providing structural stability and enhanced sustain. Its Carmelita Fine Carve profile—Do Not Roll offers an authentic vintage feel, maintaining the historically correct crisp fingerboard edges. The solid rosewood fingerboard, hide-glue fitted, provides a smooth, responsive playing surface, perfectly paired with the classic 24.75" (62.865 cm) scale length to deliver the warm, articulate tone that defines a 1959 Les Paul.
The guitar’s voice is powered by unpotted Custombucker pickups in both the neck and bridge positions, capturing the dynamic range, harmonic richness, and touch-sensitive response of late-’50s PAF-style humbuckers. The electronics are fully vintage-accurate, with two 500K CTS volume pots, two 500K CTS tone pots, a hand-wired harness with Bumblebee capacitors, and a Switchcraft toggle switch, ensuring true vintage tone shaping and reliable performance.
Hardware remains period-correct, with a nickel-finished ABR-1 bridge and lightweight aluminum tailpiece, essential for the guitar’s sustain and resonance. It is strung with Gibson’s standard .010–.046 gauge strings for immediate playability.
This Murphy Lab ’59 Les Paul Standard comes housed in a Brown/Pink Reissue case, reminiscent of the vintage Lifton-style cases, and includes a Certificate of Authenticity verifying its Made 2 Measure Custom Shop heritage. With its precise craftsmanship, radiant Lemon Burst finish, Ultra Heavy Aged patina, and status as one of the last guitars personally painted by Tom Murphy, this instrument stands as a collectible, heirloom-quality Les Paul—offering both stunning visual impact and world-class tone for discerning players and collectors alike.
