Maestro Effects Pedals — The Founder of Effects, Reborn
Before Boss. Before MXR. Before the pedalboard became standard equipment for every working guitarist, there was Maestro. Gibson brought the brand into the world in 1962, and the first thing it produced, the Fuzz-Tone FZ-1, invented the modern effects pedal market in a single stroke. The odd little box, originally conceived to emulate brass instruments, found its audience when Keith Richards used one to track a guitar part he fully expected to replace with horns. He never replaced it. The riff that resulted made the Fuzz-Tone the most wanted piece of guitar equipment in the world overnight, and the effects pedal industry was born.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Maestro continued to define what was possible. Tom Oberheim developed the Phase Shifter for the brand. Bob Moog contributed innovations including the Stage Phaser and the Parametric Filter. When the brand ceased production in 1979, many of the original pedals had already become collector's items commanding extraordinary prices.
In 2022, Gibson revived Maestro with a clear statement of intent: this was not an exercise in period-correct nostalgia. The new lineup is built on all-analog circuits, voiced for contemporary playing demands, and packaged with the retro aesthetic the name deserves. Every pedal shares the same design philosophy: rear-mounted jacks, true bypass switching, a simple control layout that gets players to great sounds without a manual, and a two-in-one voicing toggle that makes each pedal function as two distinct tools in a single enclosure. When engaged, an LED illuminates inside the classic Maestro bugle logo, one of the most charming details on any production pedal made today.
The lineup covers fuzz, overdrive, distortion, chorus, delay, tremolo, phaser, envelope filter, boost, and compressor, giving players the essential building blocks of a complete effects rig from a brand with sixty years of tonal credibility behind every circuit.
