Strandberg Electric Basses — Headless, Weightless, Effortless
Ola Strandberg began his guitar design journey in the 1980s as a hobby, driven by a simple and persistent question: why do guitars and basses have to be shaped and weighted the way they have always been? The headstock, the single most structurally unnecessary component of any stringed instrument, adds weight at the most ergonomically damaging point of the instrument, pulling the neck downward and forcing the player to compensate with their fretting hand, their shoulder, and their back across every minute of every gig and practice session. Remove it, balance the instrument properly, and something remarkable happens: playing becomes effortless in a way that no conventional instrument can match.
The Boden Bass series is the culmination of dedicated research and development spanning over two decades, perfecting the headless ergonomic design concept along with multi-scale necks for extended-range instruments. More than a bass version of the acclaimed Boden guitar family, the Boden Bass was developed from the ground up to meet the requirements of the most demanding professional players, and the result is an instrument that redefines what a bass guitar can feel like to play.
The EndurNeck
The single most immediately distinctive feature of any Strandberg bass is the EndurNeck profile, a patented neck geometry unlike any other in the instrument world. Rather than the conventional rounded profile that every other bass manufacturer uses, the EndurNeck is triangular in cross-section, with a flat back that transitions into angled sides that meet naturally at the edges of the fingerboard. The result is a neck that the hand grips with significantly less tension than a conventional profile, reducing fatigue, improving endurance, and making extended playing sessions feel genuinely easier than they do on any other instrument. Players who have made the transition describe the EndurNeck as one of those changes, like moving from a heavy guitar to a light one, that you cannot imagine going back from.
Multi-Scale Architecture
Every Strandberg bass is multi-scale, with the scale length varying across the strings to give each one its own optimized tension and intonation. The low B string on a five-string bass benefits from a longer scale length that tightens the string tension and improves note definition and clarity. The high G benefits from a shorter scale that produces a warmer, more elastic feel and tone. The Strandberg multi-scale system delivers both simultaneously, producing a bass that feels consistent and natural across all strings while performing better than any single-scale instrument can in both the low and high registers.
The Models
Boden Bass Standard 5 — The flagship of the Strandberg bass lineup, built with a lightweight chambered body, roasted maple neck with EndurNeck profile, multi-scale fretboard, and Strandberg's proprietary active pickups and onboard preamp. Available in Natural and a range of premium finishes, the Standard 5 is the instrument that most completely demonstrates what the Strandberg bass philosophy delivers: extraordinary playability, tonal clarity and definition across all five strings, and a weight that players consistently describe as almost shockingly comfortable compared to any conventional bass they have previously owned.
Boden Bass Standard 4 — The newest addition to the Strandberg bass lineup, introduced at NAMM 2025 as a compact, lightweight, and versatile four-string option designed for players who want precision and effortless playability without the extended range of the five-string. The same EndurNeck profile, multi-scale architecture, and active electronics as the Standard 5 in a four-string platform that covers the full range of conventional bass playing.
Who Plays Strandberg Bass
The Strandberg bass has found its audience among progressive, fusion, and modern players who demand technical precision, extended range, and the kind of physical comfort that makes long sets and marathon studio sessions sustainable. Composer and bassist Steve Jenkins, who worked closely with Strandberg during the development of the Boden Bass series, described the instruments as meeting the requirements of the most discriminating players, and the roster of artists who have adopted them reflects that assessment.
