Mayones Electric Basses — Gdańsk Handcraft, World-Class Tone

Mayones was founded in 1982 by two friends, but shortly became a family business owned by Halina and Zenon Dziewulski. Their two sons Dawid and Tomasz grew up in the workshop, and the family has run the operation ever since from their facility in Gdańsk, Poland. What began as a small garage workshop producing instruments for local musicians has grown into one of the most respected boutique instrument manufacturers in the world, building every bass entirely by hand to a standard that places them, in the judgment of players and dealers who know the market deeply, in the top tier of custom shop instrument makers globally.

The Mayones philosophy has never changed since those early days in Gdańsk: the best wood available on earth, craftspeople of the highest qualification who love their work, electronics from the finest manufacturers in the business, and an essentially unlimited range of custom combinations that allow every player to configure the instrument of their dreams. Every guitar and bass follows the same production routine: take the skills and experience of their luthiers, implement strict quality standards at every step of production, and add the elusive touch of their love to the instruments.

Artists including Federico Malaman, Hadrien Feraud, Mohini Dey, Nathan East, Anton Davidiants, and Wojtek Pilicowski have all chosen Mayones as their instrument of choice, a roster that spans jazz, fusion, progressive metal, and session playing at the highest professional level.

The Velvetrone Pickup System

One of the most distinctive aspects of the Mayones bass lineup is the proprietary Velvetrone pickup system developed entirely in-house. The Velvetrone pickups deliver a warm, clear, and dynamically responsive tone that players describe as combining the organic character of vintage passive pickups with the output and definition of a modern active system. Paired with Aguilar and Darkglass preamp options across the lineup, the Mayones electronics suite gives players tonal flexibility that covers everything from deep warm jazz tones to the aggressive, cutting low-end character that modern progressive and metal playing demands.

The Models

Jabba — The most widely recognized Mayones bass and the model most associated with the brand internationally. A jazz-style instrument built on Mayones' own original body design with neck-through construction, premium European tonewoods, and the Velvetrone pickup system. Available in Classic, HF, and fully custom configurations in four, five, and six-string variants, with an extraordinary range of top wood options including buckeye burl, poplar burl, and other visually spectacular exotic materials. The Hadrien Feraud Signature Jabba HF, co-designed with the French jazz fusion bassist, is among the most celebrated signature bass instruments of the last decade.

Comodous — Mayones' most versatile and tonally sophisticated bass model, built on a neck-through mahogany and wenge construction with Bartolini or Velvetrone pickups and a three-band active preamp. Available in four, five, and six-string configurations, the Comodous covers more sonic territory than any other model in the lineup, from deep warm jazz tones to the aggressive, cutting character that extended-range progressive playing demands. The Mohini Dey Signature Comodous MDi, developed with the Indian fusion bassist, brings her distinctive playing style and aesthetic sensibility to one of the most fully specified instruments in the catalog.

Patriot — A semi-hollow or fully hollow instrument that brings an acoustic warmth and resonance to the Mayones lineup unlike anything else they produce. Players describe it as delivering an acoustic vibe that changes their style, helping them comp like an upright player and solo like an electric bassist, perfectly balanced and surprisingly light. The most tonally distinctive model in the lineup and the one that most clearly demonstrates the breadth of what Mayones is capable of building.

Caledonius — A modern, forward-looking design with extended range options in five and six-string configurations, built for players who need the full tonal and technical capabilities of a multi-string instrument in a body that is as ergonomically refined as it is visually striking.

Viking — A bold, visually aggressive design for players who want the full Mayones craftsmanship and tonal philosophy in a body shape that reflects a heavier, more modern aesthetic. Available in four, five, and six-string configurations with the full range of Mayones custom options.

Cali — The most compact model in the Mayones bass lineup, available in a mini four-string configuration that delivers the Mayones standard in a shorter, lighter, more approachable package. A favorite among players who value comfort and portability without compromising on the quality of the instrument in their hands.

The Custom Experience

Every Mayones bass is available in a fully custom configuration, with complete freedom over body wood, top selection, neck profile, scale length, string spacing, pickup combination, electronics, hardware, and finish. The MayTeam works directly with players to develop specifications that reflect their individual musical needs and aesthetic preferences, and the result is always an instrument that could not have been built for anyone else.
