Gibson Electric Basses — Thunder, Sustain, and 70 Years of Rock History
Gibson did not invent the electric bass. That distinction belongs to Leo Fender. But when Gibson entered the bass market in the mid-1950s, they did so with a design philosophy so different from Fender's that the two companies effectively defined the two poles of electric bass tone that every other manufacturer has been navigating between ever since. Where Fender built for clarity, articulation, and brightness, Gibson built for warmth, sustain, and a thick, fundamental low-end authority that has powered rock and roll, heavy metal, and blues from the beginning.
The Thunderbird, introduced in 1963 and styled by automotive designer Ray Dietrich in the same studio that produced the Pontiac Firebird and Buick Riviera, became the most visually iconic Gibson bass ever made and one of the most recognizable instrument designs in rock history. John Entwistle of The Who, Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe, Kim Weston, Tom Peterson of Cheap Trick, and Tal Wilkenfeld have all built their identity around it. The SG Bass that preceded it brought Gibson's most celebrated guitar body to the bass world, and the instruments that have followed across seven decades have stayed true to the founding philosophy: mahogany construction, set neck or neck-through architecture, humbucking pickups, and a voice with more muscle and warmth than anything Fender ever produced.
The Construction
Every Gibson bass begins with mahogany, the tonewood that defines the Gibson acoustic character and contributes directly to the warm, resonant, sustain-rich voice that Gibson basses are known for. Set neck and neck-through construction, as opposed to Fender's bolt-on architecture, creates a seamless joint between neck and body that improves sustain and upper-register access while contributing to the fundamental warmth of the instrument's voice. Gibson's proprietary humbucking pickups, descended directly from Seth Lover's original PAF design, produce a thick, full, noise-free signal that passive single-coil pickups cannot approach in warmth or output level.
The Models
Thunderbird Bass — The flagship of the Gibson bass lineup and one of the great electric bass designs of all time. Neck-through mahogany construction, reverse body styling, dual Thunderbird humbuckers, and a voice that fills rooms with authoritative low-end power. The Thunderbird IV is the standard four-string configuration, available in a range of finishes including Vintage Sunburst, Ebony, and Classic White. The Thunderbird Bass 2024 updates the platform with a bound body, bound and blocked fingerboard, and period-correct appointments that make it the most visually refined Thunderbird in decades.
SG Standard Bass — Built on the iconic SG double-cutaway body that Gibson introduced in 1961, the SG Standard Bass delivers the warmth and sustain of mahogany construction with the comfort of a lighter, thinner body and the effortless upper-register access that the SG's deep cutaways provide. The EB-style humbucker produces a round, warm, fundamentally focused voice that sits naturally in any band context from blues to heavy rock.
EB Bass — A short-scale mahogany instrument with a single humbucking pickup and the warm, round, deeply resonant voice that the short-scale format has always delivered in Gibson's hands. The EB is the most immediately comfortable Gibson bass for players transitioning from guitar or simply preferring the lighter feel and reduced string tension of a shorter scale. Paul McCartney's violin bass playing alongside the EB's tonal character helped define the melodic bass vocabulary of the 1960s, and the instrument's influence on that era of music is impossible to overstate.
Gene Simmons EB-0 Bass — Co-designed with the KISS bassist and co-founder whose theatrical stage presence and powerful bass playing helped make KISS one of the most successful rock bands in history, the Gene Simmons EB-0 brings the classic Gibson short-scale bass platform to players who want the instrument associated with one of rock's most iconic figures.
Nikki Sixx Thunderbird Bass — Built in collaboration with the Mötley Crüe bassist and co-founder whose aggressive, driving bass lines powered some of the biggest rock records of the 1980s, the Nikki Sixx Thunderbird is finished in a distinctive Matte Black with mirror pickguard and reflects Sixx's uncompromising visual and sonic identity.
