Dunable Electric Basses — Built by Riff Maniacs, for Riff Maniacs
Sacha Dunable founded Dunable Guitars in Los Angeles with a mission statement that leaves nothing to interpretation: fine electric instruments built by riff maniacs, for riff maniacs. As the guitarist and vocalist of doom metal band Intronaut, Sacha spent years playing instruments that almost but never quite delivered what heavy, down-tuned rock music actually demands. So he built his own, starting with a small crew in Los Angeles, buying and milling his own wood, hand-routing his bodies, doing all the painting himself, and building a company whose reputation has spread entirely through the devotion of players who found exactly what they were looking for.
The basses are a natural extension of that philosophy. Every Dunable bass carries the same DNA as the guitars: American-made set-neck construction, bold body shapes rooted in a 1970s and 1980s design sensibility but with their own entirely original silhouettes, hand-wound proprietary pickups, and a tonal authority that heavy, loud, aggressive playing demands. These are not basses for players who want to blend in.
The Pickups
Dunable's hand-wound pickup line is a central part of what makes the brand's instruments sound the way they do. The Direwolf and Cavebear humbucker sets developed for the guitar side of the catalog have a devoted following, and the bass-specific Direwolf pickups bring the same voice to the low end: thick, defined, harmonically complex, and built to cut through even the densest guitar-driven mix without losing the fundamental punch that a heavy bass line demands.
USA Custom vs. DE Series
Dunable builds across two tiers. The USA Custom instruments are built in Los Angeles by Sacha and his core team, with hand-routed bodies, CNC precision necks, Dunable hand-wound pickups, and the full custom specification process that allows players to dial in tonewood combinations, finishes, and hardware to their exact preferences. The DE Series, produced at a respected facility in South Korea with the same stringent quality control applied to the USA instruments, brings the Dunable aesthetic and construction philosophy to a more accessible price point without compromising on tone, feel, or visual identity.
The Models
Gnarwhal Bass — The most widely recognized Dunable bass model, built around a distinctive offset body shape with the ergonomic contours and comfortable balance that Sacha prioritizes across every Dunable design. Available in four-string USA Custom and DE Series configurations, with the full range of tonewood, finish, and hardware options in the Custom Shop.
R2 Bass — The bass counterpart to Dunable's most celebrated guitar model, built on the retro-futuristic R2 body shape that has become a player favorite for its combination of visual boldness and genuine ergonomic comfort. Mahogany body, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard with block inlays, Direwolf pickups, and Grover tuners in the DE Series. Available with a 35-inch scale in limited edition configurations for players who need additional string tension in lower tunings.
Yeti Bass — A slightly more compact and aggressive body shape with the same set-neck construction and hand-wound pickup complement as the rest of the lineup. Swamp ash body, mahogany neck, and ebony fingerboard in the DE Series, and fully customizable in the USA Custom Shop.
Thunderclapper — The newest addition to the Dunable bass family and the most compact model in the lineup, bringing the brand's tonal philosophy to a shorter, lighter platform that is easier to handle on stage without sacrificing any of the sonic authority that defines the Dunable bass sound.
