Charvel Electric Basses — Hot Rod DNA, Built for the Players Who Push It

Charvel built its reputation in the 1980s as the brand that gave guitarists exactly what they wanted: fast necks, high-output pickups, and instruments engineered for performance above everything else. The basses that came out of the San Dimas factory during that era carried exactly the same philosophy, with a deeper cutaway that gave adventurous players effortless upper-register access and a neck profile borrowed directly from the guitar side of the shop. Forty years later, the Pro-Mod San Dimas Bass is back, and it is better in every measurable way than the instrument that inspired it.

The current Charvel bass lineup is lean, focused, and built around a clear identity: modern high-performance instruments with throwback DNA, designed for players who are done compromising on feel, tone, and reliability. Fender's acquisition of the brand in the early 2000s brought resources and quality control without diluting the character that made Charvel famous, and the basses reflect that combination of heritage and current manufacturing capability at every turn.

The Neck

The defining characteristic of any Charvel instrument, bass or guitar, is the neck. Charvel speed necks are slimmer and narrower than traditional bass necks, with comfortable rolled fingerboard edges that make extended playing sessions feel effortless and fast position shifts feel natural rather than forced. A pair of graphite reinforcement rods runs through the bolt-on maple neck to resist bending and warping under road conditions and climate changes, ensuring the instrument plays as well on the last night of a tour as it did on the first. The upper bout of the body is rounded and contoured to form naturally to the player's torso, adding a physical comfort that working bassists notice immediately and appreciate on every gig.

The Models

Pro-Mod San Dimas Bass PJ IV — The four-string flagship, built on the iconic San Dimas body shape that defined Charvel's original bass lineup in the late 1970s. The deeper cutaway provides effortless upper-register access, the alder body delivers a warm and punchy tonal foundation, and the PJ pickup configuration pairing a precision-style split-coil neck pickup with a jazz-style single-coil bridge gives players the full spectrum of bass tone from deep and round to bright and articulate, with everything in between available at the turn of a blend knob. Available with nickel and silver hardware options.

Pro-Mod San Dimas Bass PJ V — The five-string version of the San Dimas PJ, extending the range down to a low B for players who need more tonal territory without changing instruments. The same alder body, speed neck, PJ pickup configuration, and Charvel ergonomic philosophy as the four-string, scaled up for the demands of modern bass playing across a wider range of genres and tunings.

Pro-Mod San Dimas Bass JJ V — A five-string variant built around a dual jazz-style pickup configuration, delivering a brighter, more articulate voice with exceptional string-to-string definition that makes it particularly effective for slap, fingerstyle, and studio applications where clarity and note separation are the priority. The deeper cutaway and speed neck remain unchanged from the rest of the Pro-Mod lineup.

Frank Bello Signature — Co-designed with the hard-hitting bassist for thrash metal legends Anthrax and New York alternative favorites Helmet, the Frank Bello Signature is built for players who play loud, play fast, and play hard. Primed to thrash from the first note, it reflects Bello's dynamic, energetic approach to the instrument with specifications chosen specifically for players who operate at maximum intensity.

USA Custom Shop — For players who want a Charvel bass built to the absolute highest standards available from the brand, the Custom Shop program produces a limited number of Masterbuilt instruments each year from the Fender Custom Shop facility. Each one is a unique, hand-built instrument with premium tonewoods, individual finishing, and the care and attention that the Custom Shop designation has always represented. The Masterbuilt Bass IV in roasted ash with quartersawn maple neck and a single Seymour Duncan pickup is among the finest production basses the Charvel name has ever been on.
